AWESOME or AWFUL: Jacked Up, Off-Road-Inspired Wagons Are BACK — Is This AWESOME or AWFUL?

AWESOME or AWFUL: Jacked Up, Off-Road-Inspired Wagons Are BACK — Is This AWESOME or AWFUL?
If you were a fan of vehicles like the Subaru Forester and Volvo XC70 Cross Country, then you may need to hold on. That's because we've got some exciting news for you. While Volvo had no problem unpacking the S60 Cross Country about a year ago, it seems that others are following with aggressive, off-road-inspired wagons.

That's because Volkswagen is shipping the Golf Alltrack, Audi is delivering the all-new A4 Allroad in the fall, and Mercedes-Benz is working on the E-Class All Terrain.

While we have to admit there was something special with the creation of the A6 Allroad back in the early 2000s, it seems that these all-new models are trying to bottle up that same bit of success. There's just one difference between now and then: Sport-utility vehicles are the "must have" item. Wagons are not.

As we consider the Spies the tastemakers, we're turning to you to help us answer this very simple question. Are jacked up, off-road-inspired wagons AWESOME or AWFUL?

Why wouldn't a buyer just go out and buy a real rugged, off-road machine instead of a poser?

What say you, Spies?

Where's Mattie's reply? Seems he doesn't work, doesn't have any out side hobbies, doesn't want to spend time with his wife and kids, wife doesn't want to spend time with him. How miserable to be Mattie.

Good demo of: Argumentum ad Hominem (abusive and circumstantial) the fallacy of attacking the character or circumstances of an individual who is advancing a statement or an argument instead of trying to disprove the truth of the statement or the soundness of the argument.
______

FWIW, I don't know MDarringer, and don't agree with many of his views. Just the same, "character assassination" / Argumentum ad Hominem is Uber-Uncool :-(

-TheSteve - - - I'm a quick learner and picked up "character assassination" from Mattie. So if you are going to climb on your your high horse then do the same for Mattie's comments otherwise you are just stroking him off - - - very uncool. Or did my statement to Mattie just hit a little too close to home since you are the only other person on this site that seems to have nothing in life to do but post worthless opinions for every article?

You're a pathetic little, fat-bellied tool.

@MorePower you are so stupid that when you have been obliterated rhetorically you still pretend you're right.
Damn you're dumb.

@Truthy Don't be such an idiot tool of a pointless human being. Audi relies on FWD architectures and Mercedes and BMW don't.

Terry989: I'm also a firm believer of "two wrongs don't make a right."

I try, to the best of my ability, to be the man I *wish* I could be[1], rather than reflecting back to others what I perceive in them and I do not like.

-TheSteve - Well good, now put a muzzle on Matt next time to correct one of your wrongs since he continues to commit his sins multiple time a day. Or are you just looking for an easy out after stuffing your foot in your mouth?

Perfect example of cars I like to see on the road, but would not own myself.

For those who live in snow areas of the country, they are a great alternative to an SUV. A little more ground clearance, but still drives like a sedan. Boomers may also be attracted, as they do not need as much room for families and their gear, but still like the idea of having a little more space for Home Depot runs. Plus there is not step up or down to get in.

Great comment.

I agree with you. I like to see them on the road but, boy, I'd never have one.

I have a friend in Bolder, CO who has been on the hunt for an A4 Avant with a standard for quite some time. They stopped producing them in 2008 I believe. His options have been limited and they are not getting any newer.

Subaru has been producing Station Wagon based 4x4 vehicles for years-they have often won awards - and for many - they are an ideal compromise.

In addition - since most of these foreign manufacturers already produce the wagons for europe - where they still sell - it is a way to produce a product using existing platforms for less money than a completely separate crossover.

For decades - when I had my kids at home - a station wagon was something that I never was without - Especially the GM rear facing third seat wagons - and later - the Taurus/Sable wagon. My kids often had small station wagons as their first new car after marriage -and I still believe that a Ford Focus wagon is a better compromise for space and efficiency than any CUV in that size range. I always said that if I could not get there with a front wheel drive and snow tires - that it could wait for a cleanup. If they still made large station wagons - I would have one today in place of my Chrysler Mini-van. The Mini-van may be more space efficient - but the station wagon was still a car - something the mini-van will never be.

It's really simple. Produce what sells.

@BobM I have said "produce what sells" forever. Unless we're talking some niche product, producing what sells is how you get sales and make money.

+1 and Yup! Does anyone recall the rabid reactions of AutoSpies members when Porsche announced they were going to build an SUV? (It eventually become the Cayenne). And before that, how people were saying BMW sold out when they announced their first SUV? Now, in retrospect, we can recognized BMW was ahead of the curve, and it was a good idea to get on the bandwagon.

As for this car, I prefer a crossover to a raised station wagon, but that's just be. If there are enough buyers, then it's a good idea to sell them something they want, and which the manufacturer wants to make.

And these raised wagons cost nothing to develop so even if they fail, it's not a big financial drain for the company, but more than likely they will sell better than a conventional wagon.

I don't think there's anything wrong with niche products. There's no real risk of loss since they are minimally produced and minimal cost to produce. And I actually think there's more appeal to them than a mini-SUV, i.e. GLA or Q3.

I agree with the adage, "if it's selling, then it can't be wrong".

This is all about incremental sales. It's taken VW forever to realize that the Golf station wagon needed the outback treatment. If it's selling, it can't be wrong is true but also that every sale made is one less sale to a competitor.

I agree that give the choice of a Q3 or an allroad (A4 version), I'd rather have the allroad

People who are 'fans' of Subaru Forester and Volvo XC70 do not visit auto websites. They are not enthusiasts but only interested in an appliance car.
