Fiat Chrysler To Kill All US Auto Production Starting Next Year

The company may be called Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, but by early next year, it won't be making automobiles in the U.S.

Instead, Fiat Chrysler's U.S. plants will be focusing entirely on pickups and SUVs for the Ram and Jeep brands.

Fiat Chrysler is winding down production of the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart and will primarily produce Jeep SUVs and Ram pickups in the U.S. The company's remaining car models will be made in Mexico, Canada or other foreign nations.

The fact that the Dart and 200 are dead without replacements from another source makes it more likely that a sale of Jeep and Ram could happen sooner rather than later. The Pacifica could easily become a Ram and the Chrysler brand killed because the 300 sells even more poorly than the 200. Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati will not have any volume to brag about, so it's prime time for a merger or a buy out.

I really am starting to think VW is in the background and that Skoda will be put into Chrysler dealers.

I don't know about the 300. After Lincoln canned the Towncar, it seems most livery services have switched over to the 300. The company I use to go to/from the airport is exclusively 300, and other companies seem to be using it as well. As a towncar replacement, it seems to work really well. Is that enough to sustain production? No idea. But there is a market for it. As a back seat passenger, I've been very satisfied with the 300.

Hold on a sec!

Didn't Chrysler get a few gigatons of social assistance from taxpayers in the form a huge financial bailout? And wasn't the premise behind the bailout that it was good for America, because it would save our neighbors' jobs?

I'm sorry folks, but I'm starting to believe that these giga-Enterprises don't have our interests in mind. Ditto with those politician we call "The Government", who are supposed to be *representing* us.

Wow - at this rate, before too long, the only automaker actually manufacturing autos in the US will be Tesla. Thank goodness for Elon Musk

FCA will never sell Jeep or RAM separately from the rest - it will be all or nothing - although afterwards - anything could happen. Actually Fiat sells reasonably well in Europe - with larger share than Bmw or Mercedes and similar to Opel for instance - this is because it dominates the Italian market so well though. I have already said that Skoda would be a good match for Chrysler in the USA - although I still believe it would be even better as a replacement for VW at the entry level. It could compete on price - something VW cannot do when many of their cars come from Germany.

Chrysler is NOT closing down any production plants in the USA though - they are simply re-tooling them to produce what they can actually sell - which is CUV/SUV and trucks. It has been a while since Chrysler has produced a lot of cars in the actual USA - most production was/is in Canada - and it is because of agreements there that the 300 will continue. FCA expects that they will actually employ more people in the USA than they do now.

@TomM The Agnelli family has ZERO allegiance to the American arm and it was their plan to siphon off money to bolster the Italian side NOT to save Chrysler. Ferrari was spun off so that it would NOT be acquired in a buyout or a merger.

With Chrysler admitting that it's sales have not been as reported for 3 years, something's up, but rest assured the Agnelli family will not lose control of the Italian brands.

Ford and GM is doing the same thing, moving lower margin auto production to Mexico. Soon to buy an American made (US not NA) mainstream auto will mean buying a Japanese or Korean brand. Why you wouldn't be already is the mindboggler.

Don't worry. Trump will get this all sorted out. Hey, maybe they could move auto production into some of those abandoned casinos?

He also has an abandoned university to move production to.
