IIHS Study On Red Light Cameras Says They Save Lives - Counters Almost Ever Other Study Out There
The IIHS has data to back up this claim, and they probably have similar research to debunk any myths related to speed cameras. However, in this story, we will focus on red-light cameras, which automatically take a picture of vehicles that enter an intersection after the traffic light turned red.

According to data monitored by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for 79 large US cities, red light cameras saved approximately 1,300 lives through 2014. In the case of cities that have turned off red light cameras, the rate of fatal accidents involving drivers that ran a red light grew by 30% when compared to the time when the cameras were active.

This reminds me of a documentary I saw, which included a segment about fire retardant chemicals that were put in children's nightwear. An independent facility tested the treated clothes, and found it had no fire-retarding properties compared to the untreated garments. They went to the manufacturer, concerned about this. The manufacturer's response (and this is a direct quote): "In principle, it works."

I guess the same can be said of the red light cameras. In *principle*, they work to reduce accidents and save lives. It's just that the data does not support that.

Traffic cameras are not about saving lives but making money. The IIHS once again shows their foolishness. They simply cannot be taken seriously on anything they purport as being factual.

"IF" they are implemented properly, they are effective. But, if the city alters the light timing for the purpose of collecting money, then they are no good. I have examples of both in my area.

My city installed them at critical intersections, as well as school zones. They did NOT alter the light timing, and the only way to get a ticket was to enter the intersection after the light had turned red. Simply being in the intersection when it changed was not a ticket. Our serious accident rate dropped, and people started obeying the traffic signal. In fact, they were ticketing so few people that the decided to remove the cameras, as the goal was met.

Several nearby towns installed the cameras, and also altered the light timing. They will also ticket you if you haven't cleared the intersection when the light turned red. Naturally, people now avoid traveling in these cities, as well as visiting businesses there. But the cities refuse to alter the timing back or discontinue the cameras, because for them it's all about the money. Glad I live in the town with more sense.

Brain dead Mattie on the attack again to mask his insecurities and inabilities to fit in with the human species. It must be unbearable waking up each morning as a babbling, useless idiot with nothing in life to do but post useless Autospies comments all day long.

Bernie, are you joking? I'd vote for almost anyone but him. Although I highly doubt I'm going to cast a vote for any of our choices this year. If this is the best our country has to offer, we're in deep doo-doo.

I sincerely hope you decide that because there is "no one to vote for" that you don't go vote and encourage all your similarly minded friends to do likewise.

Matt, I haven't a clue what you meant by that. I will be voting, but will like leave the POTUS selection unmarked. I consider myself a fiscal conservative but a social moderate. There's very little I care for in either parties, but it's a rare day I consider voting for a Democrat.

On topic: I have no problem with speed cameras in school zones. I've seen far too many idiots that fly through them during times with kids going to/from school. There's no excuse for speeding there. Other places, no, I'm not in favor of speed cameras. And as I said, if implemented properly, I don't have an issue with red light cameras. I can only cite the experience in my town, but they definitely improved safety here. But as I said, they were implemented properly, not as a revenue generator.
