Tesla Targeting Transit Connect Cargo Van Market With EV Delivery Van

Elon Musk has revealed that Tesla will likely build an electric cargo van based on the chassis of its upcoming pick-up truck. He also confirmed that a minibus would be built on the Model X SUV platform.

Speaking on Twitter, the Tesla founder and CEO responded to a question from a British user, James Ross, about a possible Ford Transit rival. Ross had pointed out that pick-up truck use in Europe is rare compared with in the US.

So Elon thinks he know how to design a truck better than truck companies? The crossover was a huge stumble because he reached too far. Here we go again.

He does realize that electric delivery trucks already exist, right?

Huge stumble? They're selling every crossover they make.

I bet if I want back and looked at an old chatroom for e commerce payment systems, I'd find old comments from MDarringer telling Musk that Paypal would never work either.

Same for SpaceX.

You should replace that sock before it attracts ants. So how many pin-up posters of Elon do you have in your bedroom.

@MD: " ... replace that sock before it attracts ants." that's a good one.

Speaking of truck design of the Model X, check out the Motor Trend video where the X raced the Alfa Romeo 4C while towing a trailer with another 4C on it. While the video is entertaining and shows the obvious (hint: the 4C on the trailer beat the 4C on the ground in the quarter-mile run), how the X took off with that much load - quick acceleration with a heavy trailer - speaks volume about the chassis design. There wasn't a hint of hesitation and jerking motion as would expected.

I am not sure if there are any car/truck/suv/cuv out there that can top it.

No it doesn't. It says ONLY that electric motors deliver 100% of their torque from a dead stop and that the Alfa has an insanely laggy turbo.

Great business plan - Tesla to compete in the commodity delivery van market!

Tesla discount update - I had dinner with my friend who just bought a Tesla Model S P90D (old body style) which listed for $105,000. Tesla sold it to him for $90,000 cash.

You heard it here first - CASH ON THE HOOD AT YOUR LOCAL TESLA CENTRE

I call bullshit. I'm guessing this was one of the used loaner cars.

Doesn't the Ford Transit sell very well worldwide? This seems like a market that can work for Tesla... since a lot of businesses see value in projecting an environment-conscious image, getting something like a Tesla to drive around town may make sense over a Transit, provided the former doesn't cost 2x as much.
