Break Open The Piggie Bank - That New Genesis G80 You Were Saving For Will Only Set You Back $43,900

If you've been thinking of ordering up a new Korean luxury sedan but didn't know how much it'd set you back, you can stop wondering because Genesis has announced pricing for the new G80.

Hyundai's new luxury sedan will start at $41,400. That's for the base model, of course, with the 3.8-liter V6 and rear-wheel drive. Step up to the all-wheel-drive version and you'll be paying an extra $2,500 for a total of $43,900.

That is BEYOND reasonable pricing. Given that conventional CamCord, FusNata family sedans easily reach into the mid $30k range, the Genesis G80 is well priced. The strategy will be to emphasize the more-car-for-the-money approach and given how buyers quite often cross shop based on price rather than segment, all they have to do is get people into the car and treat them well.

Those prices "seem" like base prices for the RWD & AWD models. So, after we add exterior & interior options, how much will the V8 AWD version cost?

Still reasonable because the G80 and G90 will so obviously NOT sell at list price.

It's too bad Genesis didn't do something with a bit more distinction from the Hyundai-badged car to help with the new luxury moniker. Yes, the potentially upcoming Sport model looks a bit more aggressive so that will help, but it doesn't promise much more on the side of performance.

You probably would never allow yourself to be seen in one, much less drive one. LOL

Hyundai is a fast learner. The first Genesis sedan had an R-Spec version that Car and Driver had good things to say about: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hyundai-genesis-r-spec-50-sedan-test-review

A friend had one and yes it was no BMW, but it was a competent vehicle. It was also infinitely more reliable the the Mercedes E he dumped when he gambled on the R Spec.

The 2nd generation Genesis/G80 was a leap over the first one in terms of chassis control. The gap is virtually closed given how BMWs are no longer really tuned for drivers, but more for comfort.

Genesis arrives in a perfect storm. Cadillac and Infiniti are rudderless because of one idiot. BMW has lost its way dynamically. Thus, if Genesis is intrepid in their marketing, customer service, and attention to detail, they most decidedly DO have a shot.

The Genesis/G80 sells much better than people realize.

There most decidedly IS room for a premium automaker as an antidote to the Germans. Lexus knows that. Lincoln knows that. Genesis knows that.

Hyndai is buying market share at little to no profit in hopes they will form long term customer loyalty, where they will be able to justify higher prices in the future. Will be interesting to see if it works.

It worked for Lexus.
It worked for Audi.

They are specifically NOT rushing to do stand-alone dealers because that would be foolish.

Genesis does not have enough product yet to stand alone and further rushing to stand-alone dealers destroys synergies that could exist by co-branding.

The interim plan is to significantly upgrade Hyundai dealers to have a specific Genesis area. Not all Hyundai dealers will be allowed to sell Genesis.

The company is also actively exploring co-branding OUTSIDE the Hyundai/Kia world.

I'm sure they would be eager to have Fletcher-Jones and / or Rusnak retail the Genesis brand. That would be an obvious win/win were it to happen because Hyundai is dead serious about Genesis.

While most brands want stand-alone stores, the manufacturers cannot completely control dealers who are separate businesses. Therefore it is legally possible to co-brand a stand-alone store.

I know of a Jaguar dealer that is very interested in getting a Genesis franchise. As long as Jaguar and Genesis have separate areas, agreements with Jaguar are met.

Genesis was outselling Jaguar 2:1 for the last couple of years, but Jaguar dealers have been hurting for profits. Yes the F Pace and possibly the XE will reverse that, but Jaguar + Genesis is a logical move if it can happen.

I'm bullish on Genesis.

I think it has the capacity to poach sales from Buick, Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti, and Lincoln. BMW is vulnerable because they are making new cars that look like the old ones and tuning the driving fun out of their mainstream cars. If Marc Lickme another Camry for Audi, Genesis would compete there too.

Mattie - - - Put the skirt away and the pom-poms down before you embarrass yourself even more. You would be a fool for paying this much to drive a Hyundai. Poor reliability, mediocre handling, horrible resale (50% loss in 3 to 4 years), plus the knowledge that you could have saved for just a little longer and ended up with a real luxury car that financially works out to be less expensive in the long run.

Way too much for a hyundai. However, if you have lowered expectations, then go for it.
