Multiple Sources Reveal Mid Engine Corvette Will Hit Showroom Floors In 2019

General Motors Co. intends to start selling a mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette in early 2019, according to multiple sources familiar with the company’s planning.

While America’s iconic sports car has gone through seven generations of upgrades since it debuted in 1953, a mid-engine architecture would be the most radical change in Corvette history. The sources, who asked not to be identified because company plans have not been made public, said production of the mid-engine rocket would eventually be the only Corvette produced. One of those people said the current, front-engine C7’s Z06 and Grand Sport models would continue through 2021.

The eighth-generation Corvette C8 – codenamed “Emperor” — is targeted for an unveiling in early 2018, sources said.

Thankfully the C7 will not be immediately killed.

I expect that Corvette will become a car line - still sold by - but separate from Chevy - with both current front engine - and mid-engine models - to compete against the exotics from Europe.

I hope whatever GM chooses to do with the 'Vette, that it continues in the spirit of what it is today: a mightily impressive, American designed and made supercar, which has track numbers that rivals supercars (like Ferrari), at a fraction of the price.

From the perspective of the global luxury car business it seems to me this is a missed oppty. Cadillac must be viewed as world class and this car would set that standard. The Corvette has history and lineage, it’s an icon but it’s a front engine icon and it’s a Chevrolet, it’s not a luxury or exotic purchase. This new Vette will likely leave everything else in its dust AND/OR be thoroughly competent against Ferrari's & Lambo's but it'll still be a Chevy. If I had the money for a $150K car would it be a Chevy over a Ferrari or Lambo, I don't think so... an R8 Audi... still no. This car needs to be a Cadillac and perhaps the next gen have a sister car that is a Vette. The Cadillac version must be first so folks don't go the "oh is a Chevy dressed up like a Cadillac"... Cadillac needs their vehicles to be globally world class this will help do it!

Cadillac needs to build a large, stinkingly fast sedan that is opulent and stunning. And then move down market from that and the Escalade until they are fully transformed.

While I would agree to that 100% they're developing THIS now. The Cadillac Sixteen is one of many lost opptys. Don't forget they need names...

Matt - there was a time when I would have agreed with you - but I am not so sure any longer. I agree that Caddy still needs a larger car than the CT6 - which is still a four passenger car to me. However -Now - What I believe is that Cadillac would best be served by a LINE of Escalade models - AND a line of Crossovers as well. Yes - obviously they would need to be opulent and stunning - I am not so sure they need to be "strikingly" fast as much as they need to be "powerful" enough for the market. It appears that as long as the gas prices stay low - people who want large vehicles are opting for 4x4 - and not just 4x4 cars - they want trucks.

A high end Luxury car that could compete with ROLLS - at a much lower price point - would be the logical car to be the Halo - but I suspect that too many people have moved on from Cars to make it the savior.

Totally think that halo car for Caddilac is a necessity. Personally I still think the El Miraj is the right one. As for the mid engine Vette....I sure hope it is not so plain and ugly as the rendering on this page... Give me some 67 swagger with some 68 swoopy exotica looks...

60's Cadillacs are SEXY and that is precisely where Cadillac should go. They had size, impact, power, and everyone knew you had arrived because you stood out. Only the Escalade does that now. A smaller Escalade is paramount, but the XT5 turned into an XT7 will not be the ticket.

Cadillac should build an Elmiraj sedan and coupe that equals the S Class for size, luxury, styling impact, and smoothness even if there is no business case for them.

GM has to buy Cadillac back into the premium wars with product before sales.

The sooner Chevy dumps the HIDEOUS C7 car, the better! The designers of the C7 should all be sacked or sent over to Cadillac.

GM needs to show they can build a sustainable supercar & ultraluxury car.
