Consumer Reports Magazine Tells Justice Department That VW Owners Deserve More Compensation For Diesel Cars
Influential U.S. magazine Consumer Reports urged the Justice Department to hike compensation to 475,000 owners of polluting Volkswagen diesel vehicles and allow owners who opt for a fix to reconsider.

In comments filed on Friday on the proposed agreement, the magazine said the buyback offer undervalues retail prices and urged the use of values that "would lead to buyback offers for consumers that would be at least several hundred dollars higher."

Consumer Reports also wants owners who opt for a fix to be able to change their mind and instead sell the car back to Volkswagen because the car may perform differently once a fix is performed.

Anything short of full transaction price plus interest paid plus reimbursement for maintenance and repairs is raping the consumer.

I don't agree. I feel it should be the clean retail value of record just before this all hit, plus the penalty factor. Instead, they're using clean trade-in value. Although, I'm going to get fairly close to what I paid for my Passat new in 2014, because of the penalty added.

Of course, I'm going to come out well with my Jetta. It has minor body damage, a CEL and intermittent A/C, but none of that matters to the buy-back. We bought it a year old and have put 80,000 miles on it, and we'll get again about what we paid for it.

The reason it should be as I say is because by crucifying VW and making it sadistically excruciating, it will send a chill through the industry that in the USA you don't rape customers.

I really don't think VW has learned. They are not contrite. They need to suffer much more. The fact that they crowed about posting a sales gain shows that their arrogance is still alive and ticking.

Don't get too optimistic, values will have typical adjustments for condition, miles, damage, and needed repairs. Bonus payment to make owners feel better and to consider a VW replacement.

The only adjustment is for mileage. As long as the car can be driven to the dealership, there are no other adjustments.

I'll consider another VW, but only if the new Tiguan or CrossBlue is available. There are existing models that I would consider.
