Battle Of The Featherweights - Infiniti QX30 vs Mercedes GLA vs BMW X1

Can the bold new QX30 finally help give Infiniti the sales push bosses want? We find out as it meets BMW and Mercedes

Nissan's luxury division Infiniti is still something of a bit player in the UK car market. With a small dealer network and equally limited model range, it delivers modest sales compared with most rivals.

It expanded its range earlier this year with the launch of the Q30 premium hatch, and now the line-up has been further enlarged with the addition of the QX30 crossover. As its name suggests, the QX30 is based on the Q30, but at launch there’s a single engine and trim available, while four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox are fitted as standard, too. It has a price in the region of £30,000, which places it at the heart of the premium crossover competition.

Had an X1 as a loaner car and have to admit, I was pretty impressed. It handled much better than the X5 loaner I have prior and it had pretty good pep to it. Interior was really nice, as well.

The rental cars I've had from Audi (A4 and A3) all felt rental-car chic and no better than a Corolla.

For me a luxury car, one that costs as much as these toys, needs to ride well. So the smaller they get the harder it will be for them to ride well unless they have air suspensions. Its getting to the point where some cars are simply too small... its just me and the wife but at GLK is the smallest I can see us going. I prefer a CTS/E Class size car. These cars will sell to the millennials who are spoiled brats that think they know everything... they can have them.

I need to test drive that X1. However I will miss the X1 35i version...300hp in a small SUV was pretty cool and it was exclusive to the US market.
