BMW Promises A Power Increase To 750 HP For The Next Gen i8
BMW is planning a major push into all-electric vehicles. Engineers in Munich are working on a program called Project i20, also known internally as iNext, that will see an all-electric car – to be called the i5 or i6 – hit BMW dealerships in late 2021. In addition to a pure electric drivetrain, the car will also feature the most advanced autonomous capability yet from BMW.

I understand car development takes a long time, but making a big announcement for a 5+ years wait is kinda bummer. That's several years behind Audi/Porsche and MB. And then the i8 will be priced out of reach for a working stiff like me anyway.

But of course, you can get an i3 now while you wait. The BMW i8/i3 combo reminds me of the typical Hollywood high school story: you can't touch the hot girl but you can date her ugly sidekick.

How is BMW "several years behind Audi and Porsche?, Where is Audi 3 cylinder plug in hybrid, that is a sub 4 second 0-60 car. The Audi R8 etron is complete vapor ware. Porsche had the 918, which is sold out and cost five time more. The i8 and i3 are the same sub-brand but both have different missions.

I was talking about all-electric vehicle as in the context of the article. Both Audi and MB plan to have EVs by 2020, whereas BMW roll-out plan is late 2021 (so I lied, BMW is behind by at least a year). Plug-in hybrids are compliance cars, not the real deal.

But BMW has an all electric car now, the I3 which is out six years ahead Audi and Porsche. BMW is also ahead in hybrid, battery, and carbon fiber technology.

As a teenager of the 1960's growing up on early muscle cars I am in awe over how many cars attainable in the next few years will have 600, 700 and 800 horsepower engines. These numbers were unheard of back in the day except at drag strips. We live in wonderful times if you are a car enthusiast. Power to the people!
