Honda Trademarks ZSX Nameplate - Is This A Possible NSX Sibling?

Honda Trademarks ZSX Nameplate - Is This A Possible NSX Sibling?

It seems increasingly likely that a baby brother to the Honda NSX could be on the way, following confirmation that Honda trademarked ZSX with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on July 26.

While automakers trademark names all the time simply to protect them, rather than having the intention of bringing them to the market, the similarity between ZSX and NSX has certainly raised eyebrows and sent tongues wagging.

Honda needs a no-excuses, excellent sports car for $50K. Forget all the hybrid BS and just make a great car.

Yes they need to make a Cayman alternative for $10K less. A convertible version would be nice also.

Thank you, Porsche, for still using names for most of your cars. This letter-naming nonsense is exactly that, nonsense. Not sure I'd ever be able to proudly tell anyone that I drive an "Acura ZSX".

Anyway, yes, Acura needs this product and it needs to be great, not just good. They need a base model to start at $40k and an higher-trim and higher-performance model to start at $50k, with a roadster version.

For a brand like Acura that has the majority of its sales below $50K, a $40-50K car is where their halo needs to be.

The Corvette has ALWAYS been priced attainably and that makes it a great halo...ditto the Mustang. The NSX does nothing for Acura. The GTR does nothing for Nissan. The LFA did nothing for Lexus.

Notice that Kia is preparing a halo car that is "one tick above". A Kia Countach would have been laughed at.

Honda simply does not understand that Acura is not a premium brand, but a near-premium brand that has not worked its way up.

Genesis will be much more successful because they are delivering premium vehicles and buying in the near-premium pricing.

MDarringer-I get that you are a Hyundai/Kia/Genesis fanboy, but continuing to bash Acura is getting old. I like Hyundia, Kia, Honda, and Acura. All are great brands. Suggesting that Genesis is more premium than Acura is ridiculous. I have driven both and while I like where Genesis is going, they are no where near where Acura is currently.

As for a halo car, I completely disagree with you on this one too. If a brand is seeking to change its image, having a halo car like the NSX is extremely important for that brand's reputation. It's not about how many NSX's that can be built...its the fact that Acura is offering the most technologically advanced supercar on the market and is gaining a lot of positive press for the brand.

Completely agree Matt. A "next step" to higher transaction prices and technologies vs beyooooondddd anything else. Especially for Kia/Hyundai... makes perfect sense. I'll never buy an Acura their cars are reliable appliances but a car such as this will find a market. At $100k and up that market is significantly smaller and will only be attainable by those who can go there... the other cars will not get noticed and won't help over over all sales...

@bnilhome So you expect to live in a world where you only hear what you want to hear? You obviously are a Bernie Democrat.

The Acura RLX is literally an Accord with a slightly lengthened wheelbase whereas the Genesis sedans are not based off the Sonata. HUGE difference.

Acura is a Japanese Mercury at best.

MDarringer-I must be onto something the way you replied, bringing in politicians which has nothing to do with this topic. And if you want my input, I'm anti-Bernie, Anti-Hillary, and anti-Trump...they are all pathetic.

As for comparing Honda/Acura to Hyundia/Genesis, Aspy11 has it exactly right. The Accord is put together better than the current Genesis which is supposed to be the "premium" brand. Now unlike you I think Hyundia, Honda, Acura, and Genesis all make nice cars, but Acura>Honda>Genesis>Hyundia. I have driven all 4 and multiple models and Genesis/Hyundia have not quite yet figured out how to offer the driving responsiveness and quietness that Honda/Acura has. The one thing Hyundai/Genesis does offer is the 10 year warranty so that is their one advantage I would say.

So, Myeong Darringer, what's your explanation for Ford selling its next GT for what it being speculated to be around $400,000? Ford certainly isn't a luxury brand. I'll wait for your "well, it's about performance and Ford has its Mustang which is a performance car".
Well, I'll stop you now and say that that argument isn't aligned with your current assertion that Acura isn't a premium brand so shouldn't be selling a car at a premium price. They are two different arguments altogether. If you were to argue that Acura *currently* doesn't have true performance models in their lineup that would make a car like the NSX and future ZSX make sense, then I'd agree with you. But that isn't your current argument.

@Adolf Cidflekken I'd argue that the Ford GT is purely Ford masturbating. The GT will in no way get people wet over buying a Fusion.

So, in other words, you can't answer my question.

It's amazing to me that there is only one guy on here that typically gets negative votes for just about every post he makes. I wonder why...hmm.
