Recipe For Disaster? Poll Says Consumers Looking For Short Term Leases Of 24 Months Or Shorter

Car shoppers are interested in shorter vehicle-lease terms, according to a poll.

In an online survey of 2,500 people, about 70% say they would like lease terms of 24 months. Typical lease terms are 24 to 36 months.

Nearly 75% of the polled people showed varying interest in 30-day leases, according to the Swapalease survey. Swapalease says Uber’s plan to lease cars for what can amount to a month-long period inspired its new poll.

Actually - a short term lease is not in interest of the customer - although in reality - no lease is.

New cars depreciate most in their first year - so a short lease has to be more expensive per month than a longer term lease.

These days if you're leasing for more than three years, you're really getting hosed. Two and 3 year leases can be very attractive to buyers, but these leases are subsidized by the manufacturer so that a store will have a supply of CPO models that are then financed so the credit arm makes money twice. THAT is the drive behind short term leases.

swapalease has created a sickness for me. knowing i can get in and out of a lease is something i love. its part of the reason i think twice before i get into a porsche/audi/nissan/infiniti/acura - even if you transfer a lease it remains on your credit and youre still the co-signer.

id be very happy with 12-24 month lease. for those who are interested, yes i lose money doing it. sometimes worse than others. giving 2-3k getting into these cars then anywhere from $500-$3000 incentives getting out. what ever. if youre a car fanatic, you guys understand my sickness.

2005 m3 had it for 33 out of 42 month lease ,

@iamdabest1 So why then do you do 36/42/48 month leases? No one should lease beyond 36 months because with longer leases you're essentially paying the car off. Why not go to 24 months?

The leases that are flipped to CPO resales make money for the company's finance arm twice.
