2017 ZR1 Corvette To Have Over 700HP And Be The Last Front Engined Vette Ever

The 2017 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will be the fastest ‘Vette to ever make production. It will get around 700bhp and have a massive fixed rear wing.

The rival for the Porsche 911 GT3 will also have a new set of star-shaped alloys, which will be lighter than those fitted to the current fastest ‘Vette, the Z06.

The ZR1 will also have the Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang and Dodge Challenger Hellcat in its sights, so expect its supercharged 6.2-litre V8 to be ramped up to produce more than 700bhp.

I *my* mind, that would be sad. The 'Vette has been an icon since the mid-20th century, and part of that iconic design is the front-engine, RWD, designed and built in America, heritage. Today's front-engine 'Vettes can hold their own on a track against illustrious names like Ferrari and Porsche, so it's doing a long of things very well.

Perhaps 2 'Vettes? A new mid-engine design as this article suggests and a Classic Corvette with front engine and RWD?

Whatever Chevy decides, I hope it doesn't diminish the 'Vette's iconic status and popularity.

There is the persistent rumor that Corvettes will cease being Chevrolets and will be their own brand sold in the stand-alone dealers that GM wants Cadillac dealers to be.

They should call it something else instead of a Corvette if it has a mid-engine design. The rear wing looks goofy for some reason but par for the course for track focused offerings.

Why crash while in a piddling 630 H.P. Corvette when you can lose control and smash into an overpass abutment or the rear of a bus while having the advantage of 700 H.P. trip into enternity.

I am not so hot on the styling of the current Vette nor the renderings of the supposed mid engine Vette either. Corvettes up through the C3 body style had a kind of exotic, tough guy look but with a touch of grace or even feminity (not sure if this is the right way to describe it)...but just look at the thin chrome bumpers on a 70 model. They could have put a more massive aggressive front and rear on those cars, but they did not. In any case I think the current car lacks that look of grace...it is all brute...

De Nysschen recently responded to a report that Cadillac had cancelled a number of projects and that GM had pulled funding by revealing the future product line plans. Curiously, he said that there would be a Cadillac flagship but that it would not be a sedan. Could it be that the mid-engined Corvette is really a Cadillac after all?
