Audi's Tesla Killing A9 e-tron To Rival S-Class Coupé And Continental GT

Audi boss Rupert Stadler has given the go-ahead for a four-wheel-drive electric saloon to rival the Tesla Model S.

The luxurious new four-door is expected to be called A9 e-tron and will share much of its technology with the upcoming Q6 e-tron SUV.

The A9 e-tron name will position the advanced saloon at the top of the Audi line-up as a leader for a new range of electric vehicles, which will also include a successor to today’s A3 e-tron.

The problem with EVs in that price range is that there is a worldwide shortage of lithium = which means that lithium batteries will not come down in price as quickly as even Tesla projected.

"As an indicator of performance, Audi says the production version of the e-tron quattro concept will have a 0-62mph time of 4.6sec and a top speed limited to 131mph." [Range is 311 miles]

This a car they will start selling in 2020, 4 years from now. They are going to have to try harder when a P100D can do a 0-60 of 2.5 seconds with a top speed of 155mph and range of 315 miles... TODAY. At least Audi seems to be getting serious about EVs.

The A9 will be an electric vehicle while the S-Class Coupe and Bentley Continental GT run on gasoline - two different buying pools in that case.
