DRIVEN + VIDEO: So, What's The All-New Mercedes-Benz E300 REALLY Like? Consumer Reports' Cracks An Egg Of Knowledge On You...
While I know Consumer Reports is not everyone's favorite automotive reviewer, the reality is that this is one of the few publications that tells it like it is. That's because it's not bound by the freebies the automakers tend to ply the other guys with.

So, while you may say they should review toasters, they do demand respect because they do reviews properly and they also tell it like it is — much of the time I've noticed their findings are in line with mine.

When it comes to the all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class, how does it fair out? Well, you need to watch the clip below to learn more.

What I will say though is that the Consumer Reports' thoughts here are quite fair and balanced. Take, for example, the straightforward perspective on the E300's four-cylinder motor that gets knocked for being a bit too loud at idle. Or, how about the sumptuous cabin that is best-in-class?

Learn more about the all-new E and what Consumer Reports' has to say about it, below!

Mercedes' redesigned E-Class sticks to the brand's family values. It enjoys an opulent interior and the latest in electronic driving aids, but as you'd expect, it doesn't come cheap.

Did I read that right? 69k...I don't see me paying 69k for a 4 cylinder anything!

Dear Autospies Helpdesk - I think there is a software bug in this article as it won't open and the links don't work - some in both IE and Chrome.

Not sure about a 4-cylinder in a $70k car, but it sounds like it performs pretty well. BUT, he did specify that this was optioned to the gills. I wish they would have found a way to extract more power so it doesn't deliver the same as the engine in the C-class.
I did see a new one parked and it looks super classy if understated. Maybe the E43 AMG version will add a bit of visual oomph.

I like the new E with the luxury line.

In addition, the E43 is very slick. Saw it at the debut and it's a very, very strong product.

Even with the 4 cylinder--which I think is a stunning mistake--the E Class is by far the one to beat. The 5 Series and the A6 can't hold a candle to it.

I think Mercedes made two big mistakes with the E-Class. First, it's very difficult to tell it apart from the C-class and second the 4-cylinder engine as the only engine option unless a buyer opts for an AMG vehicle will be a huge let down for many potential buyers.

The upcoming A6 will have more unique design traits versus the A4 and it will almost certainly offer a V6 in addition to a 4-cylinder option for its regular non-S models.

Mercedes left the door wide open for the competition and looks like Audi will take advantage.

The 5-Series is going to be an afterthought. The exterior design will change very little compared to the current model and if the interior is not totally overhauled, which doesn't appear to be happening, buyers will write it off after 2 minutes of sitting in the cabin.

Still the one to beat despite the small engine and I wonder what the offerings will be for the new 5
GS and A6 tied on third for those wanting something else.

So there is no hope for a non-AMG E-Class with a V8?
