CAR WARS! Sibling Rivalry: Ford's Two High-Performance Vehicles Go Head-To-Head! Focus RS vs. Mustang GT
As we just noted in a previous thread by Doug DeMuro, while the Ford Focus RS is a hot item, it does cost a pretty penny — about $37,000. When you consider the Mustang GT actually has a cheaper base price — about $33,000 — it makes you wonder why you'd step up into the Focus RS.

You have to remember, though. They're two different flavors.

The Focus RS is a hot hatch with a forced induction four-cylinder engine. The Mustang, however, is a grand tourer with a naturally aspirated V8 motor.

On the drag strip though none of this matters. All that matters is how quick you get to the quarter-mile finish line.

Considering the differences in power and drivetrains, let's see who makes it to the finish line first.

It’s Ford vs Ford in this week’s Top Gear drag race, as we pit the muscular, 345bhp Ford Focus RS against the, um, muscular Ford Mustang. With a V8.

Yup, it’s four-cylinders vs eight, turbo vs natural aspiration, 345bhp vs 425bhp. Tom Ford and Ollie Marriage are your hosts. Take it away...

Thanks. Awesome cars, both of them.

Love both cars, but I'd rather own the Mustang.

The Mustang is of course the much prettier car. However for driving ability the Focus RS could (with a proper driver) run away from a Mustang in the corners. You have to really get up to a GT350 in the Mustang to get the driving ability of the Focus RS.

Tell yourself that.

I highly doubt most enthusiasts compare these two prior to purchase settling in on one early on. In my circle of friends there are pony car fans and hatchback fans that are loyal to one or the other and don't cross shop between the two types.

Most customers don't even cross shop cars as similar as the Camaro and Corvette. Buyers know whether they want a high-strung, buzzy, import-tuner-boy ride or a GT. I love the Focus, but it is what it is: "it's always on with it big shoes and spinning bow tie" whereas the Mustang "is Larry when you want it to be, but when you want to get home at night it settles down."
