Motor Vehicles Deaths Creep Up Nearly 10% YOY And Over 400 Expected To DIE Over The Holiday Weekend — What's The Cause?
These days it seems that there's a plethora of public safety announcements when it comes to getting behind the wheel.

Don't drive drunk.

Don't pick up the phone.

And, certainly, don't text.

Now the National Safety Council (NSC) has been keeping track of the latest motor vehicle fatalities, and the latest stats are not looking good. That's because motor vehicle-related deaths are up nearly 10 percent for the first half of the year. Obviously, that's not good news.

According to the NSC, it is expecting approximately 438 people to die over the long holiday weekend.

What could be the cause? Well, that's a bit trickier to place but we'd guess it's a mixture of multiple things. Primarily though it has to do with drunk driving, distracted driving and driving without seat belts.

Check out the press release below and be safe out there, Spies!

The National Safety Council's press release follows:

Motor Vehicle Fatalities Up 9%; No Sign of a Decrease in 2016, says National Safety Council

If trend continues, U.S. may see its deadliest driving year since 2007 and deadliest Labor Day since 2008.

?Itasca, IL – Preliminary estimates from the National Safety Council indicate motor vehicle deaths were 9% higher through the first six months of 2016 than in 2015, and 18% higher than two years ago at the six month mark. An estimated 19,100 people have been killed on U.S. roads since January, and 2.2 million were seriously injured[i]. The total estimated cost of these deaths and injuries is $205 billion.

The upward trend began in late 2014 and shows no signs of decreasing. Last winter, the National Safety Council issued its largest year-over-year percentage increase in 50 years, when it estimated fatalities had jumped 8% in 2015 compared to 2014. The continued rise in fatalities is prompting the Council to issue its highest fatality estimate for the  Labor Day holiday period since 2008. NSC estimates 438 people will be killed during the three-day holiday weekend.[ii]

States that have been particularly hard hit since 2014, the start of the upward trend, are Florida (43% increase), Georgia (34%), Indiana (33%), California (31%), North Carolina (26%), Illinois (24%) and Kentucky (24%).

"Our complacency is killing us," said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. "One hundred deaths every day should outrage us. Americans should demand change to prioritize safety actions and protect ourselves from one of the leading causes of preventable death."

While many factors likely contributed to the fatality increase, a stronger economy and lower unemployment rates are at the core of the trend. Average gas prices for the first six months of this year were 16 percent lower than 2015 levels, helping to fuel a 3.3% increase in the number of miles driven.

To help ensure safety, the National Safety Council recommends drivers:

  • Make sure every passenger buckles up on every trip
  • Designate an alcohol and drug-free driver or arrange alternate transportation
  • Get plenty of sleep and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue
  • Never use a cell phone behind the wheel, even hands-free
  • Stay engaged in teens' driving habits, as teens are three times as likely to crash as more experienced drivers
  • Learn about your vehicle's safety systems and how to use them. My Car Does What can help drivers understand features such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning systems and backup cameras.

Motor vehicle fatality estimates are subject to slight increases or decreases as data mature. NSC has issued traffic fatality estimates since 1921. Supplemental estimate information can be found here.

Believe it or not police will tell you the Easter weekend is just as bad as New Years eve or any other long weekend. As a Catholic I found this really odd until I considered, what is a family oriented high holiday on the Catholic calendar is just 3 days of drinking for folks so inclined. Who knew?

What causes car fatalities? Almost always, it's driver error, which includes making suboptimal decisions. For example, where the Police Report states "fatigue was a contributing factor", it means the driver CHOSE to keep driving while fatigued, thereby diminishing alertness, perception, reasoning, reaction times, and the likelihood of assessing, selecting, and correctly executing an appropriate response to a risk in a timely manner.

Driver error.

Now we can discuss, why are drivers making more errors, or which specific errors they are making.

1 - The cost of Gasoline is at near records lows - based on inflation - and is also much cheaper than last year. THat resulted in far more people on the roads this year than last.
2 - AS as regular air traveler - I admit that I get better treatment at airports - but if I had to endure the nonsense the average person goes through at an airport - they could not pay me enough to fly on a plane - and they don't pay anyone to do so. THe delays pretty much make shorter flights worthless - take a car - or a train -or bus.
And since flying is less of an option - people are driving longer distances - as well as late at night - as well. All this contributes to the figures.
3 - People are driving faster - which is the most major contributor to lack of adjustment time to avoid collisions.
and Lastly
4 -Donald Trump is running for president - and since his major supporters are uneducated voters - mostly white - there are more STUPID people in the road going to his rallies. ALmost anyone can get a drivers license today - but there are people who still confuse the markings on Shifters - and between Gas and brake pedals.

@TomM Oh sweetie...delusional sweetie. Your favorite terrorist in chief Obama Bin Barack is flooding our roads with "Dreamers" and Syrian terrorists so it's not Trump that is responsible for the degradation driver safety.

I'll simply never understand why the idle rich like you can be so far left, up the butt Democrat.

Oh Dear TEA Party Matt. - You of all people should by now know that I am not a Democrat - and I have stated so many times - perhaps your memory is losing to the dementia? - I am a member of the Liberal Party (It is a separate party from the democrats - who are too conservative) - and it was under President Obama's order and watch that Bin Laden was killed too. AND - every one else in the group managed to see my statement about trump followers and car accidents being tongue in cheek. You really really need to take a rest.

So far - Mr Trump has stated that he is going to cut taxes on the middle class - so he announced that he will move to reduce the HIGHEST income tax rate from 39% to 33% - for income over $250,000 - I was unaware that middle class people made that much money! (Of course - that will greatly reduce His taxes and mine)

Sorry - but the democrats are simply TOO conservative to be Liberals - they are centrists.

And I have no desire to join you in your dementia at the rest home either.
