Better Hurry Before Its Too Late: Volkswagen KILLS The Two Door GTI

If you prefer your Volkswagen GTIs the old-fashioned way, with just two doors and offering a challenge for anyone who wants to get into the back seat, you better act now. The two-door GTI is about to be discontinued in the U.S.

Our man Mark “Bark M.” Baruth is in the Pacific Northwest for the launch drive of the 2017 Golf Alltrack, and in talking to some folks from VW, he learned that the future of the GTI is four-door only. Here’s what he said:

Just talked yesterday to my son in Seattle who belongs to a very active VW group there. Monday night they were on his case about selling his two door GTI Fahrenheit and now driving a four door Golf R. The R is not offered as a two door in the USA so he had no choice. Why would VW want to piss off its base at a time when it needs them more then ever? VW makes no sense!!

VW must have determined that more people(including their so called base) want 4DR vehicles. That would seem to be the only logical reason for killing off the 2dr. And when you think about it that's one reason why sports car are always going to be a niche market.

Given that there is virtually no visual difference between the 3 and 5 door body styles--aside from the number of doors--who cares? I'd be more worried about build quality and getting rid of the fragile DSG.

The hard core VW folks, especially GTI owners, value the driving experience over the reliability. Like a BMW, of old, for the masses.

Just as long as VW retains the true manual transmission option!

Say what you want about VW's litany of issues, but it is still the only "full-line" car manufacturer that offers an excellent stick shift across most of its model line.

I worry about stick shifts going away! Even BMW has basically abandoned them, except as a "niche" option.

The only way my 14 year old son gets a car, is with a true manual transmission. Perhaps it's the best way to keep people from looking at their smart phones while driving?

Stick shift drivers are better drivers in my opinion.

Got our daughter an Audi TT Quattro. She hates the manual especially at stops on hills, or so she says. I have offered to sell it and get an automatic but she won't do it.
