Volkswagen Considers Dropping Diesels In US Market
Volkswagen may not sell diesel cars in the USA again, in the wake of the emissions scandal and amid stricter emissions legislation.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Hinrich Woebcken, head of Volkswagen’s American outfit, hinted that the automotive giant is undecided as to whether to bring diesels back to the American market.

The move makes sense, as Woebcken said the US's ever stricter emissions standards make it difficult for diesel car makers to meet legal requirements, which correlates with Volkswagen’s renewed enthusiasm for hybrid models and electric vehicles since the scandal broke.

Actually, all diesels have been dropped from the VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) lineup in North America since September 2015. That's when VW put a Stop Sale Order and removed them from their website.

The question now is whether VAG will ever bring diesels BACK to North America. Just as an FYI, VAG never halted diesel sales in the EU.

Indeed - But at least in the case of large SUVs and Trucks - they will need to produce some diesels for large vehicles. It really does not make a difference for their cars though - it will take years for them to recover from this problem - which is not yet over.

This is a good move for VW. Now that they have to fit all of their diesels with Urea injection in the US, the cost will be $4000 or so more than the gas engine...this is a huge amount in the Jetta/Passat price class.

The 2015 models all had urea already, and it didn't add $4000 to the price. We don't know yet exactly what it will take to meet the latest emissions standard, but since BMW, Mercedes and GM all have compliant diesels, it can be done.

VW should have considered dropping their bonehead management before any of this happened. Very unfortunate for both company and consumers.
