What Are The Most Overrated Cars On The Market Today?

We're sorry to break it to you, but the automotive marketplace is not a meritocracy. If it were, exotic automakers wouldn't be cranking out bloated crossovers by the boatload while FCA is forced to shut down production of the Dodge Viper.

At the end of the day, some cars just get more attention than they deserve, be it from enthusiasts or from buyers. And the guys at Vehicle Virgins think it's about time they get called out.

The presenter nailed it..
(a) Nissan GTR
(b) Subaru BRZ / Scion FR-S
(c) Toyota Prius
(d) Toyota Supra (modd'ed)
(e) Dodge Challenger Hellcat (any Hellcat for that matter).

Since the Supra has not been on the market for 20 years, I would slot the Tesla lineup (Model S/X - same car, one taller with 'falcon doors').

Tesla comes to mind.

Tesla is the opposite of over-rated, the Model S is the most disruptive car of the 21st century and now the other companies are trying to catch up to a Silicon Valley startup that had 0 experience building cars and a <1% chance of success. It's an American story people should be proud of, so overrated is that last thing that should come to mind.

I would say that Plug-in Hybrids should be one of the group - the marketplace has made it clear by NOT buying them in any significant numbers - that they simply do not want them - no matter who produces them.

I would then put in any car made by Toyota. They are simply among the most BORING cars on the planet - they look terrible - few of them ride or handle worth anything -

Add in most Nissan cars as well - especially the Verse, and Altima - appliances at best.

My problem is that I also regularly travel the world - and there are a LOT of really really BAD cars that we do not see here - enough to leave even the ones above off the list. Some of them are nothing more than enclosed go carts. THere are cars in India and South America - that simply do not qualify as toys.

There are craptons in Silicon Valley, but I would agree. A hybrid is pointless now, you get a mediocre engine and a mediocre EV blended together with higher maintenance costs, weight, and complexity. Hybrids are a stopgap that will soon be irrelevant.

TomM, I have to disagree with you on a few points. You mentioned "any car made by Toyota". Lots of people by them. You may call it boring but that's people want. If they did not like the boring cars, then there are plenty of other cars out there to choose from. In any case, I would not call them over rated.

You also mentioned Altima and Versa. Yes, these cars are meant to appeal to a category of people what wants a car that goes from A to B without much issues. And again I would not call these cars over rated.

People at this site tends to think that everybody want/need a fast exceptionally well handling car. This is not true. We are all different and we all want something different but we have restrictions like what you can afford and what's available in pool of cars you can afford.

Monster - Sorry to disagree - but the question was NOT whether people BUY the cars - it was if they are over-rated. I agree that most people buy cars as an appliance to get from here to there. There were times in the past when I had to do that too. THat is not the issue. Nor was the issue that the cars are boring - appliances are boring. THe issue was whether they were over-rated.

Considering the cars I mentioned - I stand by my statements against the Toyota - and the Nissan Models - for a basic reason - they have a reputation for being "reliable" - when in fact - they offer no more actual reliability than Ford or Chevy. However - when the cars are compared in road tests - they generally finish LAST if they even get to the final consideration. A great example is the Mazda six - which is leagues better than any Camry - and is just as reliable - but cannot compete with the Toyota marketing to sell comparable numbers. So - while there are BETTER choices at similar prices - people still buy the Camry - ANd that is why I call it overrated. And the Civic is better than a Corolla - as is a Mazda 3. And the Altima does not even compete with the Accord - much less the Mazda 6 too.

For decades - if I wanted a fast performance car - I MADE it - building an engine - trans (I am still a transmission rebuilder for racing) - and having had a gaggle of kids - and foster kids - I had my appliances - often Station Wagons and Full Size passenger Vans - and I still have a Mini-Van. And I am lucky enough - at my age - and my size (I am over 6'71/2") to be able to afford having an S-600 as my regular driver - and a CT6 as my second vehicle - which my mother drives). But I know many people cannot do that. Still - when BETTER vehicles are available at comparable prices to largest selling vehicles - that is CLEAR indication to me that those cars are overrated by the buyers.

I would say the Cayene, the "Shelby" from Hertz, a number of Lexus reskined Toyota models, Merc CLA and maybe a bit controversial but I would include the VW GTI. Yes a nice enough car but you get more driving enjoyment from a 318d stripper. On the other hand I agree with SanJoseDriver regarding Tesla, 0-60 in 2.5s, 315 mile range, no wonder Porshe, Audi etc... Are all looking for a way to compete with them. Totally disruptive! Also the Nissan may not be pretty, but it is a monster of a car for a lot less than most of its competitors so although it does not get any respect I don't think it is over rated. The hell cat may be over rated but not way over rated, with 707hp it too deserves some respect.
