Fiat 124 Spider vs Mazda MX-5 - Which Is The Sister You're Taking Home Tonight?

It is almost 50 years to the day since the original Fiat 124 Spider first broke cover. Back then, Italian car makers led the way with affordable roadsters, and it was the latest in a long line of models that placed open-top thrills and agile handling ahead of practicality and comfort.

Yet over the following half century, Fiat lost faith in two seater drop-tops as buyers looked first to hot hatches and then to rugged SUVs. So when the slow-selling, left-hand-drive-only Barchetta disappeared from price lists in 2005, the firm didn’t bother replacing it.

Definitely the Fiat. At least it has a pulse...a subtle one, but a pulse nevertheless.

For Colorado the Fiat with the turbo would be the car to get. With the Mazda you are losing about 15-20% of your power at Boulder's altitude and in the mountains proper even more.

The main issue with the Fiat is it's turbo lag below 2500 RPM. That means that you might have to end up slipping the clutch a bit more in traffic. However that's about the only major demerit. The bottom line is the Fiat is a bit more comfortable to drive than the MX5. It rides better over bumps. Yet it has less body roll. It has a bit more sound deadening and it's steering is not as light or as twitchy. It also has a slightly larger trunk. Yes enthusiasts may prefer the Miata as more of a sports car. However the Fiat is going to appeal to more drivers overall. The reason is it is simply a more livable and practical car. Finally as valhallakey says at altitude the Mazda is going to lose quite a bit of it's power where the Fiat will not.
