DRIVEN + VIDEO: The Ford Explorer PLATINUM Gets Evaluated — Would You Spend Range Rover Money For The Blue Oval?
I remember when the current-gen Ford Explorer debuted for the first time. I was speaking with Agent 001 who was at a SoCal beach for the launch — Ford did some cool stuff with sand castles if I remember correctly. Once the sheets were pulled off, 001 and I got a bit of a chuckle.

That's because the Blue Oval took some creative license from its formerly owned Land Rover. It didn't take a brain surgeon to notice the little details that were overwhelmingly Range Rover, especially in the headlights and taillights.

Now around for quite a bit of time and playing in a super competitive market, Ford has given the Explorer a refresh. It actually went one step farther in looking more upmarket and Land Rover-inspired. And now available with a Platinum trim, you can enjoy some premium features like plenty of tech and a leather-trimmed dashboard.

According to our reviewer in the clip below, the Explorer Platinum can approach a rather steep $55,000 bucks.

After watching the video below though, Spies, we're a bit curious: Would YOU spend Range Rover money for a Ford?

The Explorer is $50K less than a comparable Range Rover.

$55K? LoL! I guess FORD has the same strategy as VW with the Toaureg.

Actually a base Range Rover Sport which I would consider the competitive vehicle in the RR line is about $60k so only $5k more than the Explorer. Don't know the difference when comparably equipped but the Range Rover has a pretty good equipment list as standard.

In my mind, Ford does not equate to luxury, so paying premium brand prices for a Ford does not make sense to me.

On the other hand, although Range Rover is considered a luxury vehicle and charges for it, according to former owners, it's perhaps not the best example of a luxury vehicle and getting your money's worth.

Paying that much for an Exploder is asinine. If Lincoln had a similar sized crossover for $55K then maybe, but the Lincoln Edge is smaller.
