Facts about the Audi A5

Popular Mechanics (via Autoblog) reports that they sat down with Audi of America's Executive Vice President, John De Nysschen and talked about the soon to be released (European release in Spring of 2007, American release will probably be soon after) Most of the information is already known, but this is a confirmation from an official source. He said that the A5 would be bigger than the BMW 3 series but smaller than the BMW 6 series, with closest competitor being the Mercedes Benz CLK. It will be available with a V8 and two six speed gearboxes (manual and automatic) and a seven speed DSG (or S-Tronic as Audi has called it lately), this is the transmission that most agree is the best automated manual on the market, it will now come with 7 speeds and will handle more power than ever. The biggest news is of course the new platform; the engine will now be behind the front wheels. So far, it looks like the A5 will be one amazing vehicle and will give its established competition a fair fight.

A bigger/longer TT.
The belt line is flowing throughout the BODY of the car.The rear end looks like that of Ford Focus Cabrio(Vignale Concept).

Great! Another bunch of 11mpg V8s from Audi. I like Audi but they don't seem to be concerned about fuel effiency. I know that AWD saps some MPG but every Competing BMW has much better fuel economy than the Audis, this includes the AWD BMWs. In fact I would bet money that as a fleet, Audi has the worse fuel economy out of all the luxury makes (BMW,MB,Acura,Lexus,Infiniti)

It's funny since the A4 with the 2.0T has THE best fuel economy than any car in it's class, even with the Quattro. (BMW, Lexus, Volvo, MB)

The A8 4.2 V8 gets 18/25 with 350 hp, better than its competition. This one will be a new V8 with Audi Valvelift, with more power and better fuel efficiency.

Actually, many Audis get better fuel economy than competing BMWs.

I would say that Mercedes has it worse.

And my car gets 17mpg, not 11, thank you!

Do you think chewy memorized the fuel economy stats for every luxury sedan on the market? Of course there are exceptions.

And I highly doubt that the LS will be that fuel efficient, as it's both heavier than the A8 and has a bigger engine.

The Jaguar XJ8 gets 18/28, which is the best in class. Most owners average about 25-27mpg with it in 50/50 driving, even agressively.

I know it get better, that is a really good engine by Lexus but the Audi Valvelift engine will show similar numbers. The Jaguar engine makes less power.

Just FYI, the image posted in the article is a speculative CGI from almost 2 years ago.

The A5 will actually look quite different than this fake guess. Audi's new curved shoulder contour will make its debut on the A5, as well as new upsweep rear-side window design. The headlights will also look quite different.

This is a very significant model for Audi, representing an important new era for the company in terms of platform architecture and vehicle dynamics. The new platform will also be extended to the forthcoming A4, A6 A8, and Q5 variants. Further down the line, the A3 and eventual MK3 TT are rumored to also adopt this architecture, thereby finally making Audi’s platform technology entirely independent from VW.

has there been any talk of the pricing yet? I really hope its around the price of the A4.
