BMW Targets Continental GT And AMG S63 Coupé With 600HP M8 Flagship

A rapid 600bhp-plus BMW M8 performance flagship is set to crown a resurrected BMW 8 Series model line-up by the end of the decade.

The upmarket coupé is tentatively scheduled to make its world debut during the second half of 2019 and will rival the Aston Martin Rapide, Bentley Continental GT and Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupé in a move aimed at projecting BMW back into the upper echelons of the performance car arena.

BMW better come up with a better design than this fancy 6-Series in the picture.

At what point does BMW just fire everybody and start over?

Ultimate Driving Machine? NO - more like .... Tired Driving Designs...

Where does the apathy end?

I believe Bentley won't be threatened in the least by BMW's offering. Mercedes, to a slightly greater degree, but still, nothing to fret about.

BMW used to be known as the driver's car, while Mercedes has always aimed squarely at luxury. In recent years, BMW has become softer, less of a driving purist's car, and yet they have not become more luxurious to go toe-to-toe against Mercedes. BMW has become more accessible, arguably through becoming more diluted, more generic.

I still think BMW makes noteworthy cars. It's just that I haven't been inspired by them for a while.

I have to agree. I used to be a BMW fanatic but in recent years they have let me down with one exception. I bought a cheap 2012 318d while in Europe, drove it for 3 years and I felt it was a far better drivers car than the VW GTI we had as our daily runabout in the US. It had the sport package (whatever that means these days) but not much else and was a fun car. Not sure if the European models still have differed suspension tuning but it was well judged, steering was sharp, overall handling was excellent and the engine was peppy enough for overtaking as well as cruising 110mph o the autobahn. Also great gas mileage!
