If You Were In Charge Of Jeep How Would You Keep The Momentum Going In A SUV Saturated Market?

After posting sales gains that most automakers would sell their souls for, Jeep’s skyrocketing climb hit the upper limits of the atmosphere in September, with sales dropping by 3 percent compared to the same month a year ago.

Maybe the Jeep brand isn’t bigger than Jesus. With the new vehicle market cooling off and two of its oldest — but still strong-selling — models being pared down to one, Jeep needs to branch out to keep the momentum going.

It has products up its sleeve — a Wrangler pickup and $140,000 luxo-ute to name a couple — and has factories planned for developing nations everywhere, but Jeep could reap a sales reward if it stopped screwing up in one obvious but overlooked market.

They would sell the hell out of a 4cil, cj5-like proportion, capable & rugged but light, minimum frill baby wrangler. I know I and many others would go for it in a heartbeat besides it would help with the company´s emition profile and keep in jeep´s nature true to itself.

I believe Jeep is in a category of its own. SUVs have refinement and comfort, and they are aimed almost exclusively at street-going passengers. On the other hand, Jeep is seriously focused on off-roading capability. So SUVs are NOT cannibalizing Jeep sales.

A totally separate and unrelated question might be: How do you get Jeep sales up?

They need a 3 passenger SUV around the size of the new Acadia and Discovery, Families need more space than the current GC. It is the biggest thing keeping this family of 5 away from the Jeep brand.

Agree and the Cherokee needs a wheelbase increase too.

To assume a brand will grow forever is idiocy. FCA's top priority with Jeep should be to give its products a Toyota level of reliability and durability.

The Fiats masquerading as Jeeps--not surprisingly--are showing significant quality/reliability/durability glitches. The Grand Cherokee isn't terrible on that account but it is old. I have several friends with Wranglers who have had nothing to complain about.

Another thing to do is to address styling. Polarizing styling needs to be eradicated. Styling refreshes that are noticeable need to happen every two years.

Making a Jeep pickup be the product that battles the Taco, Canyorado, and Ranger is a no-brainer move.

Actually - the biggest point against Jeep continuing its growth is the fact that there will continue to be more and more competition - GM has already announced "Trail Ready" versions of its GMC utes - plus a ful lineup of Cadillac utes as well. With car sales falling and ute sales climbing - the manufactuers will be offering more options for their customers - and that means that Jeep will have to increase its reliability in the face of better competition.

As far as a pick up - I don't believe that the small pick up market is that much bigger in the USA _ meaning that Jeep would simply be picking up sales from Toyota-Nissan-GM. I am not sure it is worth the trouble - since those other brands would be clearly more reliable than Jeep.

Of course - 4x4 vehicles in general are less reliable and less efficient than cars are. FOr those who have never had one - the little nagging problems that only come in 4x4 designs - may create a one time purchase but no repeat purchases as well.

375K "small" pickups were sold last year--which is sizable--and that number will only increase with CAFE.
