With a Base Of Only $41K Does The Genesis G80 Make A Compelling Argument In The Luxury Sector?

With a Base Of Only $41K Does The Genesis G80 Make A Compelling Argument In The Luxury Sector?
Back in 2009 Hyundai launched a full-size sedan called the Genesis, a rear-wheel-drive luxury car with optional V8 power. Yes, it came from Hyundai and the South Korean automaker followed it up with the even larger Equus. The Genesis in particular struck a chord with many buyers who appreciated the new segment Hyundai seemingly created: affordable luxury. Jump forward to today and Genesis is now a separate brand and the Genesis sedan is now the G80, the subject of today’s review.

Is the Genesis G80 a luxury car? I don't know. It looks okay enough to inspire me to go to a showroom and sit in one to see if I want to go further, and that, in itself, is a big deal. I assume that defect numbers, need for repairs, and maintenance and repair costs would be reasonably low.

I say give it a chance and see how it does in the market. I speculate that it won't steal many Mercedes, BMW, Audi, or Lexus customers, but it might inspire a fair number of Hyundai (and other non luxury car) owners to take a step up to an affordable "luxury" car.

I think the Genesis is a nice premium vehicle and is definitely an upgrade from Hyundai. I would say its competition would include the Lincoln Continental, Buick Lacrosse, Chrysler 300, and Kia K900. Genesis will really need to up its game to move up with the big boys in the Luxury segment.

Exactly. It will be a upgrade for those in kia/hyundais and be good alternatives to Buick and Lincoln.

The G80 is most definitely a luxury car, in the same way the Lexus ES is. If Genesis was smart, they would spend less time comparing themselves to the Germans, and more time trying to steal from Lexus, and encouraging Hyundai/Kia owners to go to Genesis as their step-up. And they need to make sure Kia products don't encroach in their segment.

The Genesis G80 is as much a premium/upscale vehicle as the Hyundai Genesis was.

Besides, what dealer is going to order a BASE G80 & no options? You'd have to order that kind of stripped-down trim specifically. But a $41k base is a good start.

At the price it's at, there is value, but when you sit in it, you start to see the fit and finish is not on par with Audi or new Mercedes. If the price was $10k more, it would not move.

It'll never work.

The interior reminds me a lot of the F10 5 series. Those asymmetric air vents just bother me.

Already easily recognizable as a Genesis on the street and that's a good thing.
The $41k starting price also good.
Not at an Audi/Lexus level yet.
...Yet.

Obviously you've not driven the G80 and an A6 in quick succession. The "gap" comes down to differences in tuning. The Genesis is more "American" comfort and the A6 can be flinty. The difference is not signifiant. The G80 easily beats the RLX and the Infiniti Q whatever. The Lexus GS leaves me wanting and the G80 I find quite good.

With BMW and Audi hellbent on introducing totally new cars that look a decade old. The G80 is definitely poised for possibility.
