DRIVEN + VIDEO: Consumer Reports Gives Us The Download On The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox

Though I know many of the Spies do not seem to trust Consumer Reports when it comes to automobile reviews, I will say this. These guys and girls are good at what they do. 

Simply put, no one does reviews the right way and CR definitely ensures to be straight to its audience no matter the consequences. We appreciate that. 

So, when I saw that the publisher got its hands on the all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, I wanted to see if General Motors can continue moving units in volume. It's pretty hard to go anywhere without seeing the last-gen Equinox. 

Considering the competition is steep in this small to midsize sport-utilty vehicle class, the Equinox has to bring its "A" game. According to CR, GM consciously focused the Equinox to go up against the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester more squarely. That's because the last-gen product was a bit too much of a mid-size SUV and the others could, literally and figuratively, run circles around it. Now, the GMC Acadia will take on the mid-size SUV competition head on.

Downsized to better line up with small SUV competitors, the redesigned-for-2018 Equinox remains roomy and user-friendly. The four-cylinder only engine lineup includes an optional segment-exclusive turbodiesel.

The Equinox will continue to be a good product, but like the one it replaces, the new one is a middle-of-the-road, ruffle-no-feathers design that seeks anonymity. Maybe that's a virtue given how Honda and Toyota have embraced garishness with the CRV and RAV4. The current Equinox is a competent product despite being old as dirt underneath and I suspect the new one will be incrementally better. Compared to the new Tiguan, however, the Equinox is a daring beauty.

Always have to get a dig into VW, right Matt? Your personal opinion, of course. My personal opinion is that the new Tiguan looks quite nice. I guess we cancel each other out, huh?

To me the Tiguan looks model year 2000, but at least the Tiguan isn't as deplorable looking as the Atlas. :)

Styling from the side looks like the current GLE which is to say the least, "chickish". No doubt it'll hit the target market and sell well.
