Everything You Need to Know About the Tesla Model S P100D
The Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode is the third fastest accelerating production car ever produced, with a 0-60 mph time of 2.5* seconds. However, both the LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder were limited run, million dollar vehicles and cannot be bought new. While those cars are small two seaters with very little luggage space, the pure electric, all-wheel drive Model S P100D has four doors, seats up to 5 adults plus 2 children and has exceptional cargo capacity.

The 100 kWh battery also increases range substantially to an estimated 315 miles on the EPA cycle and 613 km on the NEDC cycle, making it the first to go beyond 300 miles and the longest range production electric vehicle by far.

How come no other car companies can produce anything like this?

My guess is that they don't have the same culture of innovation and constant refinement that Silicon Valley is known for. It has only been 4 years since the P85 was released and the P100D is such a dramatic improvement in terms of performance and capabilities over that original model. No other company makes 10-20 tweaks each week to their production models (like a software company). There are downsides but it does mean fast innovation.

...(3) Interest rates near "0.0%" (keeps this and other marginal companies afloat), (4) a Cult-Like investor base who wants to drink the cool-aid, and (5) a "push the envelope" culture that arises because why shouldn't the company go "balls to the wall" and roll the dice on new ideas, if its future is in question because it has never earned a profit and relies on significant infusions of outside capital to stay afloat.

Cue the "musical chairs" analogy.. because the music will always stop.

It's worse than that, they can produce something like that if not better, they just don't want to. The profit margins and perceived safety of the status quo are too good to be forfeited.

Bunch of scared old men here (aka dumbass Republicans who are petrified of changes). First, the IRS give a 5 year leeway for losses for new businesses, which meant that very little startups are profitable within that time frame, and the government recognizes that. If you think you can do a better job managing a company, then start your own billion+ dollar startup instead of bitching like well, little bitches. Second, electric cars have the potential to goes faster, be more reliable, and they do this without any pollution to speak of.

So again, WTF are you babies scared of?
