Top 10 Automotive Video Games

Top 10 Automotive Video Games
Come autumn, new car models aren't the only much-anticipated consumer products to enter the marketplace.

Video game consoles tend to drop this time of year, too. The next-generation Nintendo Wii is due to arrive at stores on Nov. 19. And the Sony PlayStation 3, beset by production woes, is likewise pegged for a November launch.

With these new platforms almost upon us, ForbesAutos.com decided that it'd be an ideal time to step back through video gaming history and ponder, what are the top 10 video games that feature cars?

Our entirely subjective rankings begin with Gran Turismo 4, the current release from the celebrated, comprehensive driving-simulation series. The list then winds through versions of classic driving and racing series such as OutRun, Need for Speed and Project Gotham Racing. Also included in the Top 10: nostalgic, pioneering favorites such as Pole Position and Spy Hunter. (For more information on any of these titles, click on the game name in the box below.)

I have too. I don't think it is.
The ULTIMATE auto game is Driver: Parallel Lines
It is the most realistic game on the market.

This game rules. You can not get more realistic.

I completely agree- it has something like 600 cars and has the best graphics I've ever seen on a video game.

It says in the GT4 description that the Skyline GTR is rear wheel drive. Heh.

that's because it IS foo. japanese GT championship modified their rules and banned AWD cars to compete in recent years, forcing nismo to convert their gtr's to RWD ever since the change.

That's nice, but the car shown in that photo isn't the GT Championship model. The 2002 street version, which is what they're showing, has AWD. This is pretty obvious in light of the fact that the car is doing a four wheel burnout in that very photo. Did you miss the smoke rising from under the front left wheel?

Without a question, the best possible auto game is Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition. You can modify and tune up the vehicles, and not to mention the body upgrades are crazy...I would admit its not like GT, but most video gamers aren't looking for that type of racing...its too realistic!

GT4 and Need for speed - no doubt.

Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed
Need for Speed: Most Wanted are the best versions of NFS.

OK the console games are fun but for a true sim look at Grand Prix Legends, GTR2, GTL or rFactor

Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed was cool because you could buy old, wrecked cars, repair them, and sell them for a huge profit...I'm not sure if this was a glitch or not but it was much more lucrative than actually winning races...and it allowed you to have a garage full of classic Porsches in ever color if you so wished. And the 78 930 Turbo is my dream car, it's scary to drive even in a video game

pole position and fast and furious completly sucked and should be taken off the list and be replaced with previous versions of Grand Tourismo (2 is my favorite) and project gotham racing 1.

its easy to see why pole position made it as it supposedly pionered the racing arcade game, but thats bs. nobody liked that game, it was the game someone played when all the other games were taken or broken. there was a really cool game called off road i think, where you drove a car in circles from an overhead view for money to make your car fast. the game where you drove around RC cars and had to spell nintendo, and micro machines were much better prehistoric racing games than pole position.

Gran Turismo 4

No two ways about it... when compared to the GT series everything else may aswell just be Stunt Car Racer on the C64.
