Return Of The BMW 8 Series, Might Mean The Death Of The 6 Series
Coupes may not be selling like they used to, but don’t tell that to BMW. The automaker is preparing to relaunch the 8 Series, its biggest two-door ever made. Sources told the German version of Automotive News, Automobilwoche, that the project is currently underway and has an arrival date of 2018. The new model will be based on the 7 Series and is said to cost around €150,000 (about $163,000). This would make the revived 8 Series the most expensive BMW on the market, with the coupe eclipsing the i8’s MSRP of $140,700.

BMW doesn't seem to have much luck in the "big coupe" domain, and with this goofy-faced 8-series, I don't think that'll change.

Seems like an odd strategy from a company that has been trying to put a product in every existing niche available, and creating new ones at the same time. I don't think there's a reason to eliminate the 6 Series, just make sure there's enough distinction between the models as there seems to be a clear-enough distinction from the C-Coupe to the E-Coupe to the S-Coupe.

Large cars and coupes are insanely profitable for the luxury makers. 7's are said to be 5% of sales and 20% of profits. It will sell just like the big S Class coupe.

There is room for the 6 series, the problem is, it is overpriced. BMW needs to re-do the 6 series and base it off the new 5 series, then price it to compete with the E class coupe.

A tear has been shed by successful, suburban, 60 yr old, white, male, gold-chain wearing, orthodontists, plastic surgeons, and realtors everywhere!

They will have to buy MB E-Class Coupes now or Maserati Gran Turismo's.

It has been broadly reported in European car enthusiast magazines that the 6 series as we now know it will be eliminated and replaced by a model to compete directly against 911 Porsches. As mentioned here it has also been reported that the current 5GT will be restyled (softer hatch look) and taken up market (more luxurious interior) causing the rumor that it will be rebadged as a 6 series.

BMW's biggest problem is the current price of the 6-Series Coupe is too high. There won't be a large enough market for an expensive 6-Series Coupe and an even more expensive 8-Series Coupe.

BMW needs to lower the price of the 6-Series Coupe if the 8-Series is to have any chance of sales success because having two expensive coupes is not the answer.

Mercedes-Benz has a clear price differentiation between the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class Coupes.

It's high priced and just not that attractive either. Then factor in that the M4 is much better at being a convincing BMW coupe. A large, stately, true-four-place coupe would have a better chance than a new 6 Series dubbed the 8 Series.
