BMW and Advertisement!

I live in Southern California and I always hear on the radio a commercial about how the BMW 5-series is the slowest in its class, which is in price depression.
I did a little research of my own, using KBB.com, comparing a 1998 Lexus GS 300, 1998 BMW 5 Series 528i, 1998 MB E-Class E320 and 1998 Audi A6 2.8.
These are my results (Base retail price):

1998 Lexus GS 300 Sedan 4D: $15,250
1998 BMW 5 Series 528i Sedan 4D: $15,100
1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E320 Sedan 4D: $14,050
1998 Audi A6 Sedan 4D 2.8: $9,915

I've actually seen that more recent Audis are on the higher end of their classes for resale value. Take the A4 for example. In three years, it holds 54% of its value, compared to the 3 Series, at 52%.

But of course my '00 A6 2.7T (leased) got me $17K because it was over the lease...

Did anyone bother to see how much the cars cost brand new relative to what they sell for used? If an E320 was $50K brand new and the Audi was $33K The the Benzo dropped 72% and the Audi only dropped 70%. Your numbers mean nothing Luxurious without the price when new.

I think the BMW depreciation rate is greatly helped by their free service program. free wipers... yum. Actually, does anybody know how exactly the free program effects their depreciation rate?
I noticed on the radio they always say 'over the period of five years, BMW has the least depreciation', but doesn't the free service last exactly 5 years only?

the "included" price is 4 years not 5
for Audi it was also included until 2006 so i don't think that has anything to do with it

I guess lexus has a higher resale value that BMW and Merc. becuase of availability. There are way more BMWs and Mercs on the road. I cant explain Audi though. I guess that has to do with less demand for Audis.

One more thing, as I remember the GS had a lower original MSRP than both the 5-series and the E-class.

They can also call from the NADA values as well. You can make darn near anything possible with the right pricing source and location:

NADA is wildly different than KBB:
GS300 is $13,925
E320 is $13,275
BMW is $12,125
A6 is $9957

NADA is for banks to decide how much they'll loan on a car, you'll never get NADA trade or retail value out of a car unless it just so happens to match KBB, Mannheim auction, or Black Book values. It almost never does.

BMW and Mini are supposed to be top value holders according to msn.com - I wonder what happened here???

Anyways the way I see it is if you go with these brands:

Acura
BMW
Honda
Lexus
Mini
Toyota

You'll be fine with resale. These are pretty much always high on resale values.

Also I don't think that availability is the key to MB's and BMW's being price lower, because then Audi should have the highest resale, right (because of least availability -if you didn't get it)??? Lexus' command higher prices because people know that even though they are 8 years old they still work fine.

There is no arguement that Lexus has good resell value. (even though there has been some receint stumbles for Lexus) Resell is great for Lexus. Here are some reasons.

1. 20% 30% less then the BMW, Audi in the first place
2. Strong demand in the USA (more people looking for Lexus)
3. reliable, basic, good cars that every grandma would love to own. ( I worked next to a Lexus dealer and 1/2 the people buying cars they were buying their last car before they die)
4. 27% lower miles on the average Lexus trade in then the national average ( old people don't drive that much) the only car that compairs is the Cadilac

If anyone here is going to Argue that lexus donsen't have good resell then they are fighting a loosing battle. Lexus have good resell but that is not going to get me to buy one. Everyone leases anyway.

Question? What is the resell of the 3 series, A4, vs the IS?

Ok. These all have different engine placements, I'm pretty sure if BMW had a 530i (3.0L) back in 1998 it would have higher KBB than Lexus GS300 (3.0L) wouldn't y'all agree? Im not defending my favorite brand, but it just doesnt seem like a good comparison.

Plus another thing... BMW's price depression differs only by $150 in reguard to Lexus. Wow. Some of you guys make it seem like it depresses by thousands of dollars.

Come on ppl be serious.

Lexus = 3.0L
BMW = 2.8L
Benz = 3.2L
Audi = 2.8L

RefuG, don't count on the BMW 530i with that .2 L extra displacement to increase the value by nearly $2000 to MATCH the Lexus, if that was what you were trying to GRASP.

Chewy - just to throw a snag in your post - a used (L) is better than a used OOOO ! That is what it proves. I believe you are looking for a different topic of discussion, no? Reason why I say that is because your post wasn't relevant!

Chewy - i agree
the 1998 A6 sucked and I am an audi guy. then they went to the 3.0 it was much better but still a soft car. The 3.2 has been a great car and has great projection of resell.

Will- if you are buying a car just for resell then buy a Honda. If you want a good car then look for other factors.

1998 BMW 5 Series 528i Sedan 4D: $15,100

MikeG, youre not following what I'm saying are you?
Buddy you have to read and understand little better, cause by these figuras its only $150 price difference, not some $2000 figure you just made up.

I never said its gonna be $2000 for .2 extra displacement so I have bo clue what you're talkin about. Price of 1998 GS300 & 1998 528i is almost tha same anyways, just imagine if that 528i was substituted by 530i, I'm pretty sure BMW would have a higher price.

If I'm not mistaken, 530i (3.0L) came out as 2001 year model in US. We didn't have 530i back in 1998.

You, sir, are a fool.

I suppose a comparison b/w the GS 430 vs M45 is unfair, LS 460 vs S 550 is unfair, 750i vs S 550 is unfair, Camry V6 vs Accord V6 is unfair (Camry's V6 is .2L bigger)... You see where this is going?

Engine sizes are different between manufacturers - do you not compare the 3l to the 3.5 in the lexus today. These are equal comparisons between the 528i and the GS300 - because they were equal competitors back in the day. Also have you forgotten that the 528i also cost a lot more than the GS 300 back then. I mean today a Lexus GS 350 with all the options (from the list with Nav-ML audi, etc) cost about 51277) while the BMW (530i with premium package, comfort access, and nav cost about 53395 - with manual not AT which cost 1400 more ).

So while the BMW costs more it lost more on the resale value? Also if you look at depreciation values from edmunds.com this is what you see

2007 BMW 530i

5-year depreciation amount $31,573

2006 GS 300 (2007 not available and also to match engine size ;) )

5-year depreciation amount $26,417.

If you want you check for your self.

I just did a quick little comparo on KBB and this is what I got:

2004 A4 sedan 3.0Q Auto 45K miles = $21255
2004 330 sedan Auto 45K miles = $21640
2004 C320 sedan Auto 45K miles = $21800
2004 IS300 sedan Auto 45K miles = $18260

There you have it; PROOF! Final answer end of discussion. BMW is the best! Oops, maybe my math is wrong, maybe the Audi is. Oops, well lets see, the Benz cost about $47000 new, the BMW was about $45000, The Audi was about $39000, and the Lexus was about $33000. Um, I guess that still makes BMW the winner right? If you take the square root of the residual value times the model year + maintenance and subtact desirability and perceived demand, Ah, that's it, I was right, BMW wins! I thought I was right the first time. Anyone care to challenge? Oh and by the way, BMW is just the best performance car ever made!

Something for everyone to ponder...

Does resale value really matter to the bulk of us? If we're wealthy enough to afford buying new Audis, BMWs, Lexuses and Mercedes-Benz cars, we can obviously afford to buy another one without much knocked off of the price, unless you lost your job in the time you had your current car. This is merely my perception, as I can afford to buy a new car without the resale. But it may not be the same for all of you.

People ... just do a controlled evaluation so to speak ... I just went onto Edmunds.com ... Equipment on the cars configured was Auto trans, heated seats, electrocomatic mirrors, power seats, leather, moonroof and a cd player .... Exterior color Black ... 70k miles on every car ... based in the midwest of the US ... all cars in good condition ...the year in question 2001 . trade in/ retail

1. BMW 530 sedan - $ 16,203 / $ 19.938
2. Lexus GS300 - $ 14,640 / $ 18,598
3. MB E320 RWD - $ 14,247 / $ 17,376
4. AUDI 2.7T AWD - $ 11,885 / $ 14,893
5. JAGUAR 3.0 S - $ 10,952 / $ 14,240

someone brought up the 3-series ... So I ran a simialr comparison on the entry level cars of all the manufacturers ... Year - 2003 : Equip - leather, heat seats, moonroof, power seats, auto trans, electo-rear mirros, wood trim, xenon lights : mileage - 45k : condition - good ... here is the breakdown ------

1. BMW 330 RWD - $ 22,660 / $ 26,913
2. MB C320 RWD - $ 19,407 / $ 23,196
3. INFINITI G35 - $ 17,636 / $ 20,906
4. ACURA 3.2 TL S - $ 15,551 / $ 18,243
5. AUDI A4 3.0 AWD - $ 18,944 / $ 22,156
6. jAGUAR X 3.0 AWD - $ 15,794 / $ 19,954

The Lexus Is300 isnt in the equation due to a much lower cost for the car ... requirements were to have at least a minimum $35k MSRP to start with ....

In both cases, BMW has the highest residual and resale value ...
