Volkswagen On Track To Topple Toyota As World's Largest Automaker Despite Dieselgate

Volkswagen Group leads Toyota Motor in global sales after nine months, putting the Japanese automaker's four-year reign as the world's largest carmaker at risk.

Toyota's worldwide deliveries rose 0.4 percent to 7.53 million vehicles in the nine months through September, it said in a statement today. VW Group's sales climbed 2.4 percent to about 7.61 million in the same span, according to an Oct. 14 statement.

I suspect the profit story is just the opposite with VW offering much larger discounts to move the metal in all markets outside China.

That will be hard to digest with all of the dieselgate charge offs. The odd thing is that the scandal really hasn't hurt the sales of the non diesel models that much globally

VW depends on suckers being born every minute. Even if Dieselgate had never happened there are serious quality issues with the brand that impact reliability and durability that Toyota for example just doesn't have a problem with. Toyotas are also a lot cheaper to repair.
