"Jones also said that for impacts of this severity, it is common for vehicles to ignite, whether they are electric, hybrid or powered by petrol or diesel."

Not really a battery fire. The Battalion Chief says any car in a crash like that would catch fire.

This one wasn't autopilot so that part is out of the equation. The factor of the battery fire and the hazard to others in the area seems to be the main story here.

BTW My Friday is just fine

Fires with electric cars cannot be put out with water, so more than likely first responders will let it burn, passengers and all.

It's not that fire trucks cannot evolve, it is that having enough fire arrester for a highly specific electrical fire makes little or no sense given that most fires are structural and can be put down with water.

@atc98092 - now why did you have to go and ruin 009's Friday :-)

It's called sensationalism. It's all the rage to report every single accident, illegal turn and paint scratch as long as the car's name starts with "Tes" and ends with "la". Since this car came to market other cars stopped crashing altogether.

Per the witness:

"...it hit the tree, then it bounced around, then it exploded.."

The Tesla body count continues. It started two years ago with exploding Tesla's, then the 'autopilot' fatalities took over the Tesla headlines, now we are back to Tesla's exploding on impact.

So Tesla has sold about 100,000 vehicles, there have been reported horrific crashes in a handful of them...when is a nimble product liability attorney going to run some statistics on the crashes to determine that Tesla's are more dangerous than the average luxury vehicle.

When was the last time you heard of a 2 year old E350, S550, 750i, 535i, Panamera (all Tesla competitors) bursting into flames as a result of an accident? Try Never!

Heck, when was the last time a Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf self-incinerated upon impact? Try Never!

The only recent accident of the magnitude that compare to the Tesla accidents is the Paul Walker Porsche crash two years ago where he and Roger hit an object which caused the car to shatter and burst into flames. I challenge Tesla lovers to dig up footage of Tesla competitors vehicles going into self-destruct mode upon impact.

Its only a matter of time until more bodies pile up and the lawsuits start.

I suggest you do a little more research. There are numerous reports of other make of cars exploding into fireballs after impact, BMW's, Audis, and Benzes included.

Three recent incidents involving wrong way driver head on crashes where a vehicle burst into flames, some with fatalities:
1. Vermont pickup hits VW Jetta that catches fire. 5 teenagers die
2. Above pickup driver then steals responding police Ford Explorer and gets into another wrong way non fatal accident. The Explorer catches fire.
3. Infiniti coupe going the wrong way hits Mercury Sable which burns to a crisp. 4 college students die as well as Infiniti driver.

The point is there are many vehicle accidents resulting in fire. Our media is biased on many topics and seeks sensationalism and therefore has lost credibility.

I'm not sure if your rant is real or not....but it is surely wrong

One example I can give about Chevy Volt - they had fires when they were being crash tested by the NHTSA....it was all over the news...

At the speed they must have been going, any car including a Hummer would have been annihilated. I'm surprised one of them made it to the hospital.

It is really getting old to literally point out every single accident in a Tesla, especially when drivers are doing stupid things. Thousands of people die every day in accidents, the media bias against Tesla is completely uncalled for and is basically just clickbait.

I repeat....when was the last time you heard of a 2 year old E350, S550, 750i, 535i, Panamera (all Tesla competitors) bursting into flames as a result of a SINGLE CAR accident? Try Never!

Thanks Vette71, for several examples of multi-car accidents, seemingly where at least one of the cars was an old clunker.

When do you hear of affluent, smart, careful, professional people (Paul Walker crash aside) driving $80,000 to $100,000 newer vehicles get in a single car crash where the car explodes to the extent that the passengers can't be rescued. NEVER!

By the way, those $100,000 cars you don't read about exploding on impact, are fueled by GASOLINE, one of the most flammable mediums on earth. Gas vapors catch fire at about 95 degrees F if there is an ignition source. Yet, most significant accidents with newish gas cars these days DON'T RESULT IN A FIREBALL.

I think Tesla's are basically one big Samsung phone, Swagway Scooter, (insert name of Lithium Ion Battery powered device here).

Careless people driving clunkers get into flaming crashes all the time. Newer cars usually don't - that's my point.

I would never buy a Tesla because I just think the Tesla team plays it fast and loose with many things.

Flame away ... (pun intended)

@runbuh: mre30 is really that ignorant and apparently stupid. This is not the first time he does this - he has been outed many times. I guess we can just ignore him and let him jerk off with his own jokes.

And the idiots did below. I love how mental midgets think they have refuted someone when they haven't and then high five themselves before breaking into a happy dance. We must forgive them. They are voting for Hillary.

Derranged Darringer - - - back at it again with your moronic comments and Trump inspired bullying attacks. A few weeks ago you shit your panties when the Admins threatened to ban you from this site for being a "menace" to Autospies. If you got banned, what else would you have left. You actually became civil for a few days, but we knew it wouldn't last long since chemically damaged chemical drain cells never recover. mre has been refuted, you have been refuted, but you are just to stupid to know when your ass has been kicked, so yes we are breaking into our happy dance. Everyone is more intelligent than you, don't hate then for your inadequacies.
