Acura VS. Audi

Acura VS. Audi
You see… the all new Acura MDX and the Audi Q7 don’t really look alike! First of all not both cars are on completely different levels! The Audi Q7 is more rounded and contemporary whereas the Acura is more squared off and sporty.

I know some of you like the new MDX… but refer to the rear as “Lazy” when it actually is very strong! If you look closely it is miles away from what the Q7 offers! First of all Honda was the first to inspire this new type of lower-pointed taillight design in the RDX concept.

I know that I would buy the Acura MDX in a heartbeat over the Q7! There are so many reasons why! One being the price: The Q7 is thousands more than the MDX – when the MDX has a better engine! The Q7 offers a bulky 4.2 Liter 350 horsepower engine… while the Acura offers a 3.7 Liter 300 horsepower engine.

Convinced yet?

There is no way in Hell that Audi has a better cars than Acura. Honda is the one of the leaders in engine developement technology. Audi is owned by Volkswagen, one of the worst engines in its class several decades running. I don't know why anyone would buy an Audi after that reputation. I think that Honda should be an honored car company for revolutionizing the engine. They were the first car company to meet U.S. emission tests without putting a bunch of crap on the car to lower emissions. Volkswagen/Audi can't say the same. There is hardly a vehicle out there as good as a Honda.

It looks like Audi just pumped up the Avant and voila!
The MDX has more curve than the hurst looking Audi.
By the way, I think Audi copied these tailights of Honda. (RDX Concept) Now we see why they use camo on concept, because of such.

You are wrong.

Audi copied their Nuvolari concept from 2003, as did Honda with the current Civic and this Recent Acura MDX. The Nuvolari never made it into production, however many of it's design queues are present within current Audi production cars, and many parts of it have been copied by other automakers.

Remember the Q7 was based on the Audi Pikes Peak Quattro concept , a car unveiled in 2004. Audi just updated the taillights to be similar to the Nuvolari design that Audi incorporated into all Modern production cars with their logo.

JCF, you can be so weird sometimes...

You've obviously never seen the Q7 on the road. It's absolutely gorgeous, and much, much better than this odd MDX (the front of the MDX is super hyper-ugly).

"First of all Honda was the first to inspire this new type of lower-pointed taillight design in the RDX concept. "

Wrong. The Audi A3 Sportback and updated A4 were out before the RDX concept. Both have those rear lights that Acura copied. Nice try, though.

The Q7 actually starts at LESS money than the MDX, if you'd care to notice. The new Audi Q7 3.6 quattro starts at about $39,000 (with a 280hp V6 FSI engine), whereas the slightly more powerful but less roomy and less good-looking MDX is rumored to start at about $43,000.

Well, considering that the 4.2 V8 in the Q7 made Ward's 10 Best Engines last year, and an Acura engine hasn't been named in over 10 years, I think it's safe to say Audi's engines are far superior to what is offered in Acura.

Over the past years, Audi's 1.8t, 2.0t, 2.7t, 3.2, and 4.2 powerplants have been praised by Ward's 10 Best.

This entire thread is stupid. Hardly anyone considering an Audi will glance at a lowly Acura. Let's consider the facts:

1. Acura's lack of V8 and V12 engines
2. Acura's lack of quality I4 and V6 engines (evident by lack of Ward's recognition).
3. Lack of technological innovation
4. Lack of a large sedan to compete with the A8
5. Until recently, only offered in FWD
6. Acura is simply a rebaged Honda--they aren't offered anywhere but the US and are not even a luxury company.

Clearly, these two companies are on completely different levels. The average Audi customer is likely to cross shop with BMW and Mercedes, not some near luxury, imitation brand like Acura. Consider the points:

1. Audi's highly rated 4.2 and 6.0 W12 engines
2. Audi's consistent quality I4 and V6 engines (evident by Ward's consecutive 10 Best awards).
3. Audi's commitment to technological innovation--top rated Quattro, FSI, diesel/hybrid forefronts, etc.
4. Highly rated interiors with the best plastics, woods, and finest leather.
5. International brand status as a Tier I company.

NO COMPARISON.

lexusis350:

You really are an accurate representation of the typical Lexus owner: disillutioned, ignorant, and impressionable--the exact demographic Lexus goes after in their marketing campaigns.

To automatically assume that a Toyota or Honda will have superior technology to a VW/Audi simply because it's Japanese.

Interesting I suppose how in Europe, VW is considered to be of higher quality than Toyota. So is Audi.

How am I disillusioned? The ball can roll both ways. I could turn around and say you're disillusioned for liking Audi's when they are no where near as reliable, user friendly, and luxurious as many other vehicles, including German makes. Just because I prefer Lexus over lower quality Audi's and Volkswagens, is no reason to say that my opinion is wrong. I like Lexus, you like Audi. Accept the fact that no one is going to like the same things as you, even though it is hard for you to understand why they might like that brand. I don't look down on anyone who owns a Mercedes, BMW, or Audi, I just think to myself, that's what they chose, there could have been better, but that's obviously what they wanted.

Oh yeah, if Volkswagen is reguarded as a high quality car in Europe, then I never want to go there. If a Volkswagen is high quality over there, and a pile of junk on wheels here, then Europeans have small standards of what they expect from their vehicles.

The problem with your argument is that you're relying on biased, unscientific, American quality surveys to judge reliability and claim that your Toyota is more reliable than a comparable VW or Audi.

How many times must we go over the same points? That JD Powers determines the most reliable makes on a three year point basis based on "problems", yet doesn't modify the data to account for mileage, driving habits, or maintenance intervals. Furthermore, this foolish survey doesn't even define for us what these so-called problems are.

Taking a closer look at the data, we see that between a Lexus and the least "reliable" make, there was only a three "problem" difference. Accounting for the fact that a problem isn't even clearly defined, these differences are trivial.

Again, if Lexus were such a great company with so much to offer, they'd be doing a lot better than 20,000 units for all of Europe last year. If they were so great, they'd be more highly regarded in Australia and Canada. But they're not.

Fact is, in other countries, people prefer the prestige of a German car over a nicely done imitation with a so-called "quality" advantage.

You Japanese fanatics may not like it, but your dubious quality surveys just don't amount to much.

According to the 2006 VDS study, Audi ranks in at 297 problems per 100 vehicles, or 2.97 problems per vehicle. Lexus is quoted as having 136 problems per 100 vehicles, or 1.36 problems per vehicle.

Given the fact that my A4 has yet to have a single problem after two years and my dad's almost new GS has had some transmission issues, I'd say this information is flawed.

So AUDIMAN4,
By saying that Audi has more problems that Lexus, you're the one being biased. You just can't face the fact that Lexus is taking major profits from other luxury makes. You're so upset that Audi isn't what it once was, that you're trying to convince yourself and everyone else that they don't have problems. Well, let me update you. In the last 18 years, German cars have spiraled down in sales and as long as Lexus is thrown into the mix, they will never be what they once were. Lexus is a revolution in the luxury class.

Where do you get this stuff? Last time I checked the 20,000 units Lexus sold in Europe last year didn't even register!

Lexus may be a threat in the US, but the expectations of international customers are quite different and it's unlikely they will ever gain the amount of success that they have in the US.

Lexus was successful in pulling the wool over the typical American consumers eyes--copying tried and true technology from German makes, pretending it's a European company, and then selling the product at a discount.

That strategy will not work in other markets, where consumers are simply more educated.

Now more accurate to the point is Lexus did take the SUV market and run with it for a while but they have surely lost their grip. Also Lexus does not nor has ever had a better car. They are just faster to cover it up. And last point from me for those of you who are not in the Auto industry, it's a little known fact but JD Powers only surveys a small percentage of cars and only for 1 quarter of the year. There is no possible way to get true real world results that way. I for one have owned a Lexus and traded it in after 2 months of ownership and I still get recall notices from Lexus about the car. I haven't owend the car for over 6 years now. If their cars didn't break they would come with lifetime warranties and their dealers would on serve as quick lube stations. First of all I would just like to through in my personal opinion that on a style basis, I think the MDX looks are FAR superior to that of the Q7. I had seen pictures of the Q7 and thought it was decent looking, but when I actually saw one in the dealer show room last week I think in reality it just looks like a station wagon. Also every major auto website and magazine is raving about how The new MDX has the most powerful engine in its class... one of which was a direct comparison with the Q7. Funny how even though as Audiman4 mentioned Acura doesn't have the larger V8 engines as Audi... it doesn't need them. They can blow the competition out of the water while being more efficient with a V6. But then that seems to be the German engineering attiture... Don't worry about using natural resources for the short time that we still have them.
On another note, the most important reason why I would always choose an Acura over an Audi is that of reliability. My first car was a VW. It was a NIGHTMARE! I had it for only a year, but I can't tell you how many times it broke down. Then I upgraded to an Audi A4. No kidding, the check engine light came on 1 week after I bought it. It did break down. Audi replaced under lemon law stipulations. The second A4 they gave me ran fine for the most part for the next few years I had it until I had to pay $5,000 worth of repairs because they had to remove the turbo and take apart the entire engine to do the repair work. I also had to get the seats replaced as the leather cracked on the front 2 seats within the first 2 years. I have now had an Acura TL for almost 3 years, 40,000 miles.... not one problem. I find it to have all the same luxury features my A4, but MUCH greater dependability. And in reality... what good does a car do you no matter how luxurious it is if it doesn't serve its main function.... transportation.

I visited Japan over the summer and after hearing the "entertainers" there, must admit THEY SUCK. They copy everything from Rock, to Rap/Hip Hop, to Country from American artists.

There isn't much focus on individuality in Japan--from a young age the Japanese are taught to conform to societal values, and expressions of individuality are highly frowned upon.

I think Japanese cars are a testament to this cultural indoctrination. They take German designs, ideology, and technology and run with them, then sell them to Americans at cheaper prices. It's actually an ingenious philosophy, albeit a self defeating one.

How bout Toyota and Honda were first to the hybrid market in 97 while Audi was still trying to find its place.

Audi just finally gets an SUV to the market and it's total crap while Toyota and Honda and Acura and Lexus have had SUVs out since 2000.

How bout the LEXus LS460's new self parking system?

Acura's SH-AWD.

Acura's superior NAVI system.

And both Lexus and Acura outsell Audi by a couple 10 thousands.

"Audi's are higher end cars for the more discriminating customer."

I hate to embarrass you, but do you have any idea what you just said? Discriminating? That means to discriminate against someone or something; usually used as a racial term. When you discriminate against someone, you use a racial slur.

I'm pretty sure you meant "discerning". And yes, Audi owners are more discerning than Acura owners. Most people who drive an RL can't afford an A8.

I will have to use CAPS Lock for this one, as some people really don't seem to get it.. ACURA COPIED AUDI. FIRST IT WAS WHEN THE NEW CIVIC COPIED THE TAIL LIGHTS OF THE AUDI A4. THEY ARE ALSO VERY SIMILAR, THE AUDI A4 CAME OUT BEFORE THE CIVIC. NOW ACURA HAS COPIED AUDI ONCE AGAIN WITH THE MDX, THE Q7 CAME OUT EARLIER. THE "BULKY" AUDI V8 SPINS TO HIGHER RPM THAN THE HONDA V6. ALSO, DIDN'T YOU SEE THE AUTOSPIES REPORT ON THE MDX, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO ROOM IN THE THIRD ROW, YOUR HEAD TOUCHES THE REAER GLASS.

Where should I start? The Acura EL came out in '02 along with the Acura RDX concept which came out in '02 too with that type of rear light cluster WAY before the crap-faced A4 came out with its imitation. Acura has just been using the same design that THEY DESIGNED FIRST on their newer MDX and RDX models. Audi can go find another light cluster.

If I recall correctly, VW can only get 280hp out of a 3.6L V6 while Honda can get 290hp out of only a 3.5L V6. So Honda's V6 is superior to VW's. ANd the Honda is only a SOHC while VW's is a DOHC. BURN.

Since you seem to believe the MDX's third row is really tight, why don't you provide some pictures of your beloved Q7 with the third row. I bet it's worse cuz Acura's are SO MUCH BETTER than Audis.

One last thing, who has the superior AWD system? ACURA!! No one can touch Acura's new SH-AWD system.

Oh, and who continues to score below average on the reliability tests? Who wants to own a piece of crap that spends half it's life in the shop? Stupid Audi lovers!

I get what you're saying, but it's all CRAP.

So, according to your flawed logic, the MDX engine is superior to the one in the Q7 because it gets 10 more horsepower out of a .1L smaller engine?

Allow me to educate you: Acura has not produced a single engine in the last several years that is worthly of Ward's 10 Best recognition.

Audi has had five engines named on that list, including the 4.2L FSI.

Acura's engines are clearly inferior.

Keep in mind just because a design comes out soon after another design, it doesn't mean they were first. Design themes may take a few years to be applied. Although you make light of the horsepower advantage, fact is its an advantage. You also want to dimiss the value of all the consumer groups ratings, it is not all inaccurate not to mention the fact that Audi has the worst resale value in the US.

All one really needs to do is look at VAG--they own/have control over Lamborghini, Bentley, and Bugatti--no Japanese car can touch this. The collaboration of VAG with such makes only means better technology and innovation, something the Japanese seem to lack with their "copy and run" mentality.

Audi fans are really defensive of their favorite brand. Could it be because Audi doesn't have any advantage to cling to in the real world??? It is the same thing here that we have seen in the past.

Japanese designs look like Pokemon, you people are racists, etc etc etc.

Anything new to this argument. We have seen this same thing in the past with Lexus, now it is Acura's turn

Acura has some faults too, but it does not make them any less of a competitor.

I know Acura doesn't have a V-8. Someone here also said that Acura's only come in FWD and now Sh-awd. Well buddy find me a car that Audi sells now with RWD. Also since 07 Acura won't have the NSX, but that was a MR car if didn't notice.

Anyway me saying all of these things will not change your preconceived minds that German things are always better than anything else. And some of you were saying that others are racist - while also making comments on how Audi is better because Audi is German. You also hate Acura just because it is Japanese, are you scared of Japanese products??? My point is that lets compare cars based on, well the cars itself and not the nationality of the company.

It is sad that we have to compare cars on the level of nationality rather than the actual things cars have in them.

If anything, it's Acura tht doesn't have "any advantage to cling to in the real world", or maybe I should rephrase that "in the US", as Honda has neither the monetary funds nor experience to launch a successful global brand.

As for the chassis, the point was that every Audi is available with Quattro, which is not the case for Acura. This makes them nothing more than upscale Honda's, that aren't even creative as Toyota's attempts.

I think the points above speak for themselves--Acura just isn't there. No one considers Acura a real luxury brand, not even Lexus fans.

That's going to change. Acura is in the process of making all their models standard with SH-AWD, the most advanced AWD system in the world.

Also, have you ever noticed that Acura sells 200,000 plus a year in the US alone. How many does Audi sell a year in the US? I guess consumers have voted with their money that they like Acuras more than Audis.

And also, which company came out with a MR EXOTIC SUPER CAR in the 1990s? More than 15 years later Audi some how comes up with a skimpy super car that they just copied from Lambo.

Nice, have I mentioned Audis are crap?

I believe Acura and Audi cater to different people. However, that does not mean Audi is superior to Acura. The Audi man should chose his words better. Acura is not a 'cheap' brand. It may not be as much as an Audi, BMW, or Mercedes but the quality is there. The TL is relatively the same price as an Audi A4 and it offers more bang for buck. Quality isn't shabby in the TL as well. It's got good technology in that car.

Driving an Acura doesn't mean you're less wealthy than an Audi driver. SOme people who make 60K a year drive a Mercedes or BMW but 100K yearly earners drive a TL.

So don't get it twisted guys, Acura is not a low-end brand. It's mid-ranged but not ultra luxury like the S-classes. It is a luxury brand i'm sorry to tell you. It is no rebadged Honda. If you put it that way, are Audi's rebadged VW's? Be real, even I wouldn't say that.

AUDIMAN, i DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU'RE HATING ON ACURA SO MUCH. IT'S OBVIOUS THAT YOU ARE IGNORANT AND SAY IT'S CHEAP. THE TL A-SPEC UP HERE IN CANADA IS 46K + TAXES. THERE ARE AS MANY AUDI A4'S AS THERE ARE TL'S. I DON'T KNOW IN WHICH AREA YOU LIVE IN BUT THE TL BEING A PIECE OF JUNK IS KIND OF HARSH.

I LIKE ACURA'S AND AUDI'S. IT'S JUST FUNNY TO SEE YOU STOOP TO THIS LEVEL TO START RAMBLING ON LIKE THIS. WHERE DO YOU STAND IN SOCIETY THAT MAKES YOU SO MUCH BETTER TO DRIVE IN AN AUDI A4 AND THAN ONE IN A TL.

IF ONE OF THE TOP BILLIONAIRES IN THE WORLD DRIVES AN OLD VOLVO WAGEN DOES IT MEAN HE'S POOR AND DRIVING A PIECE OF SH!T. AUDI'S ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE. ACURA'S ARE NOT EXCLUSIVE. LETS AGREE ON SOMETHING HERE.. IT IS ALL SUBJECTIVE. IGNORANCE IS JUST LAME.

as for this MDX, i think it looks ugly, the RDX looks much better. The MDX needs to be redesigned again or it needs to hit the trash cause it will not sell.

Hey, i hope i didn't get you too boiled up inside. It's all fun discussion and debates in here ain't it? Obviously nothing personal. Just here to have some good ol' arguments on ppl's point of views.

The MDX is gorgeous inside and out. I love the risk that they took on the design of the front grill. Also, judging by the may the Q7 interior was creeking on the test track when I drove it comparing it to the MDX, it seems to me that the build quality is better as well. Furthermore, the V6 may not be a V8, but it has an intoxicating sound and it easily out performs the V6 Q7. People may argue on this site that the Acura isn't in the same league as the Audi but my clients beg to differ. Frequently, I have perspective customers comparing BMW, Mercedes, and Audi to the MDX. Truly comparing, not just argueing about it on a website.

Unfortunately for you Logical, the rest of the world with the exception of yourself, view Audi as a competitor to the big boys that you mention, such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The answer is simple, in the views of many people Audi makes cars that compete head on with BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Why do you think so many car magazines test the three together (Audi, BMW & MB), instead of testing the Audi against an Acura, Infiniti or Volvo?

"How am I disillusioned? The ball can roll both ways. I could turn around and say you're disillusioned for liking Audi's when they are no where near as reliable, user friendly, and luxurious as many other vehicles, including German makes. Just because I prefer Lexus over lower quality Audi's and Volkswagens, is no reason to say that my opinion is wrong."

"Oh yeah, if Volkswagen is reguarded as a high quality car in Europe, then I never want to go there. If a Volkswagen is high quality over there, and a pile of junk on wheels here, then Europeans have small standards of what they expect from their vehicles."

All this is wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong. VWs positively scream high-quality. You better be joking about Audis not being luxurious. Go sit in an A8 and see for yourself! It makes the LS430 look as cheap as chips.

Ha! Audis, low quality? Even the VW Passat is higher quality than the RX330! And we have an RX330!

How the hell are VWs "a pile of junk on wheels" over here? That may be your view, but most people in the US know that VW builds a very fun-to-drive, well-built alternative to the corporation of world domination that is Toyota.

I believe that Lexus is lower quality than Audi. Does that make me right or wrong? No! And just because I think you're wrong, it doesn't make it right!

logical-

Oh, boo-hoo, Audi is the world's 3rd best-selling premium brand, only behind BMW and M-B... sorry to break that to you.

I think you guys are differing in your definition of quality. IS350 is most likely referring to the fact that VW has absolutely abyssmal reliability (I know- I worked for them for years until I grew tired of the constant heat from customers) and you are referring to the beautiful craftsmanship and quality of materials which VW employs. Two different things entirely- both measures of "quality"

I've owned a Volkswagen and an Audi. They were the single biggest mistakes I have ever made. The Volkwagen broke down at least twice a weak and the Audi broke down a couple of times a year. I will never, ever go back to anything Volkswagen has any part of. I've owned a Lexus since 1992 and I have never had a single problem with any of them. And I used to have an RX 330 and there is no possible way a Volkswagen can surpass it's quality and luxury.

I would take the Q7 over the MDX for the simple reason that the 4WD system of a vehicle of this type is its essence. Unfortunately, Honda has a weird system that has the rear axel rotating at a different speed than the front axel at all times with the rotational speed difference being accomodated by clutches that are constantly slipping and wearing out. I just arrived in an unexpected snowstorm in Northern Manitoba in my leased Audi A6 Quattro with only 1/8th inch tread left on the original low-profile all-season tires. I made it all the way 20 km into the bush on an unplowed gravel road where my friend lives. I am fully satisfied with Audi's reliable 4WD system which uses a Torsen centre differential. Honda's MDX brochure tells you what Honda's SHAWD does but fails to explain exactly how it works mechanically and fails to disclose anything about the constantly slipping clutches in the rear differential. All manufacturers of 4WD cars need to provide much more information on the design details of their 4WD system so that customers can better weed out the inferior el-cheapo systems from the superior ones.

I'm not an SUV person but the MDX does look nice. If I had to choose between the two I wouldn't even test drive the Audi. Adding up the unmatched level of technological excellence typical for all Honda products, this choice should be a no-brainer.

The Audi was 33,000 with a 4 cyl. that felt weak, it had no room, and I personally liked the interior of the Acura (black with aluminum trim), 6MT and a better reputation for quality. Just read "Car and Driver," Motortrend, etc. For as long as I can remember, the TL beats the A4 in comparisons. The MDX will probably sell 50% more units than the Q7. If you spend more money on a car just to be able to say that...well how smart is that?
