Chevrolet Corvette Z06 gets BEAT by Tesla Model S P100D

What's the real difference between a 650hp supercharged V8 RWD car and a 762hp electric car? The latter has instant torque at 0 rpm. The Tesla churns a 10.76sec 1/4-mile time on its first run and a 10.79 on the second run. The Corvette runs 11.2 twice.

I am a Ford guy but I will take the Corvette anytime. I don't care if the Tesla is faster.

With the Corvette you can do run after run as long as you have gas. Drag the Tesla hard and it will often go into its limp mode due to battery temperature, but once the juice is gone, it's a paper weight for hours. Yes the Tesla is fast but it's pretty much a "one and done" machine.

That's actually not correct. The P100D's battery has an improved cooling system and it will be nearly as fast at a 20% charge as a 100% charge (maybe a 0.2 sec difference). You can push it all day, no problem. 315 miles is likely far more than what you would need for drag racing, but it can charge 170 miles in 30min.

As for the Model S vs. the Corvette, I'm sure the Corvette has better handling--but the P100D seats 5 people, has 2 trunks, fully autonomous capabilities, and the best infotainment system of any car ever. If performance is your only concern the Vette has an edge, but for an all around car that is also practical the S is tough to beat.

When you're drag racing the Tesla, it will NOT last 315 miles.

That is definitely true, my comment was misleading. 315 "ideal" miles should be enough to cover driving to a track, having some fun, and driving back. Let's say it is 50 miles each way to the track, you still have 200 miles to play with. That might translate to 50-75 miles worth of very aggressive acceleration and driving.

Electric cars don't penalize as much as ICEs for aggressive acceleration, but they have a higher penalty for sustained high speeds. You can probably get 100+ drags out of a P100D before it needs to be charged.

Top Gear BBC recently drove 200 miles around NY, drag raced the Model X, AND had range left over: https://twitter.com/TeslaMotors/status/794247505911259136

For those people who need to be "fastest from a stoplight" to feel better about something/someone, this is grrrrrrreat!

For those who don't base their purchase decision on this one fact alone -- and I believe this speaks to most of the world -- it's just another number in the pile.

Now factor in a Fusion Sport that looks like a more-attractive version of the Tesla S delivering astounding performance for 1/3 the cost and the Tesla remains an emperor's-new-clothes kind of vehicle.
