Volkswagen To Slash 30,000 Jobs By 2020 To Cover Dieselgate Costs
Volkswagen AG reached a landmark agreement with workers to cut as many as 30,000 jobs globally and save 3.7 billion euros ($3.92 billion) in expenses as the company tries to claw back from its emissions-cheating scandal and invest in electric vehicles.

Reducing headcount by nearly 5 percent will come through attrition as the automaker agreed to refrain from forced layoffs until 2025, the German company said today.

Niiiiice. Rape the workers VW! What a stellar company. Even if this is partially accomplished by retirement, this is terrible on VW's part.

Raping the workers would be laying them off NOW in order to get immediately more productive (as is Toyota) and generate more cash to cover the costs of dieselgate. As it is, doing it this more humane way over a decade probably isn't enough or timely enough to make VW a competitive company going forward, especially as they invest in the transition into EVs from ICE.

Interesting subtopic is the fact that EV's require less labor than ICE to produce. Yet another example of technology displacing labor, ala ATMs to bank tellers, and AI starting to displace car and truck drivers. That is a HUGE problem the developed world faces going forward. What to do with all these now idle people?

Depending on WHO you asked.

If you ask the people from the "RIGHT", they'd demand "BRING BACK OUR JOBS"

If you ask those on the "LEFT", they'd say "learn a new trade and adapt".

Remember the movie "Other People's Money" ?

With the current political/social climate, I can't find anyone in the "MIDDLE" regardless of how they think themselves. Just like the products on supermarket shelves, we all now have a LABEL.

HenryN. Funny all the "lefties" I know make your statement about "find a new trade". Heard it in spades a couple of years ago when the war on coal accelerated. To date nothing has been done to help these now out of work miners do that. No new trade training, no relocation assistance no nothing. And there are many other examples of similar situations. All those red votes was these people's answer to your statement.

Well they got their wish. It's a matter of time for them to find out how well it will turn out. I hope they do well - but honestly doubt it. If you go against progress, you will continue to fall further behind - there is no secret in that.
