#LAAutoShow: Audi To Offer The All-New A5 And S5 Sportback For The FIRST Time In The States — 001's REAL-LIFE Pics Here
With the first-gen Audi A5 and S5 Sportback, The States were not so lucky. That's because Audi did not ship them here. It seems like the four-door fastback/sportback look has proven worthy enough that Audi has decided to play along now though.

For the first time, Audi showed off the S5 Sportback at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show (LAAS).

While the S5's look, overall, hasn't changed very much over the last-gen model, it has matured and become a bit more slick. That means its lines are a bit sharper as is its interior. See what I mean in Agent 001's snaps below.

As in the standard S4 and S5, it will feature a six-cylinder engine good for a touch over 350 horsepower. Equipped in the Sportback will be an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

So, what do YOU make of it? Would you RATHER have an S4 or is the S5 Sportback a better choice?

Audi's press release follows:

Audi of America introduces the all-new 2018 A5 and S5 Sportback models, available for the first time in the US spring 2017

  • The all-new 2018 Audi A5 and S5 Sportback models offer distinctive styling with excellent versatility and standard seating for five
  • With double the cargo capacity over the coupe and generous interior space, the A5 and S5 Sportback are a functional and sporty choice for customers
  • The A5 and S5 Sportback will arrive in dealerships spring 2017

Joining the A5 model line, the all-new Audi A5 and S5 Sportback will make their US debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show. Featuring the distinctive Sportback body style, first introduced on the successful A7 model line, and generous interior space, the five-door coupe is a sporty yet functional choice for customers.

The 2018 A5 and S5 Sportback models mirror the coupe’s breakthrough design language, featuring a wider, flatter Singleframe® grille and longer, lower hood lines that highlight the powerful engines of the new A5 family vehicles. The precise wave-design shoulder line is more pronounced than previous generations and wider wheel arches provide design cues to the vehicle’s quattro® DNA. Rear horizontal design lines joined by the slim, yet sculptural three-dimension LED taillights offer a distinctly powerful look and emphasize vehicle width.

The refined interior of the A5, with seating for up to five standard, includes greater attention to detail through functional refinements and additional driver-focused technologies. A three-dimensional decorative inlay trim with climate control integration spans from the door panels across the dashboard and adds breadth and lightness. The available Bang & Olufsen® sound system with 3D sound offers both an acoustic and visual highlight in the interior, and the standard panoramic sunroof helps bring light into the cabin.

Similar to the Coupe and Cabriolet models, the A5 Sportback comes equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine mated to a seven-speed S tronic® dual-clutch automatic transmission that produces 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and sprints from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds.

The S5 Sportback is equipped with a re-engineered 3.0-liter TFSI® V6 engine to produce an impressive 354 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and sprints from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The S5 is also newly equipped with an eight-speed Tiptronic® automatic transmission that is well suited for the low-end torque of the new 3.0-liter turbocharged engine.

Both variants of the Sportback come standard-equipped with quattro® all-wheel drive, offering enhanced agility through a self-locking center differential, with a basic ratio of 40:60 front to rear, and wheel-selective torque control. The redesigned front five-link suspension with lightweight construction offers greater steering precision and excellent handling through optimized steering-rack placement direct at wheel centers.

The A5 and S5 Sportback offer the same advanced infotainment systems as the A5 Coupe and Cabriolet models including the available Audi virtual cockpit, MMI® touch® with handwriting-recognition and newly available in-car Audi connect® infotainment and security features, supported by 4G LTE connectivity (where available). A full suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including standard Audi pre sense® basic and city and available Audi adaptive cruise control with stop & go and traffic jam assist, help drivers navigate the road and traffic with confidence.

Is it just me of this looks more like a nice Hyundai?

I don't see the Hyundai connection, but I do feel it's going downhill from where Audi used to be. If this were a Volkswagen, I'd be say "awesome... for a Volkswagen." But considering this is a luxury car, it doesn't inspire me.

@TheSteve the face looks a lot like an Elantra for one.

The irony is that Audi's designer went to Hyundai and evolved the Audi design ethic into some tasty creations, but Audi stagnated so now it looks like Audi is dumbing down Hyundai/Kia/Genesis styling themes.

This will find some success on these shores. But I think the majority of its sales will come from the A4 shoppers than from the 4Series GC shoppers, much like the 4GC seems to be affecting sales of the 3 Series as I see more and more 4GCs on the road and 3 Series sales are slipping.

Seeing pictures is much different than seeing up close. I have seen this in Europe and it looks great, easily confused with the A7. Neither the Hyundai nor VW look nearly as refined. The 4 GC is very good looking though.

I think the biggest issues for this car will be the new VW CC. In concept form, IMO, it looks just as good, if not better than the A5/S5 Sportback. If VW offers the 4-cylinder with 4Motion, unlike the last version, then VW will have a strong player, especially in R-Line form.
