The next Jaguar F-Type could be mid-engined
Design director Ian Callum opened up about the sports car at the L.A. Auto Show.

Since its arrival in 2013, the Jaguar F-Type sports car has been a thing of much desire. Available in either open- or closed-top variants, and a range of engine options, more than 4,600 examples were sold in 2015 alone. That makes it one of the best-selling cars the company has ever built. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement.

Callum is out of fresh ideas. The F Type is his only real success at Jaguar with the F Pace trailing it. If anything, a mid-engined vehicle should be added to the line.

Mid engine vehicles are not stunningly better for handling than front or rear engined vehicles. The 911 easily acquits itself as does the Stingray. The ONLY reason to take the F Type to mid engine orientation would be to add an electric motor for the front "axle".

Well the F-Types primary problem has been its excessive weight compared to cars like the Corvette and Porsche. That has hurt it in terms of acceleration and handling. Going mid engine may be an over reaction. Not that the F Type handles poorly. However at it's price point it needs to be up to par. A mid engine sounds like a lot of expensive engineering and potentially adding a lot more to it's price point.

We have to remember that when the F Type was envisioned, it was planned to be more of a Stingray/Cayman priced car and not one that usually transacts well above $100K. Above the F Type was supposed to be a new XK, but then Jaguar did not have the money to do that, so they installed the F Type at the XK price point. Dealers were not thrilled when they discovered that their "volume selling" Jaguar sports coupe was being relegated to a niche player.
