NHTSA Now Wants To Control Your Smart Phone
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today issued new voluntary guidelines aimed at curbing driver distraction from cell phones and other portable devices, extending the department’s reach to tech firms and app developers.
 
The guidelines apply to device makers and app developers such as Apple, Google and others, according to a NHTSA spokesman. They recommend that companies design their portable devices to be paired with in-car systems, and be operated using the vehicle’s user interface.

I hope they think of all of the ramifications. IE: 911 calls when you are the driver, NAV applications, conversations via Bluetooth.

There can be safe interaction while driving, but it needs to have some leeway.

Wow and to think that for years I chain smoked, drank coffee, talked on my cell phone (before handsfree, speakers or bluetooth) and drove a stick shift all at the same time in stop and go Toronto traffic. How did I survive. When exactly did personal responsibility for one's own actions die?
