In reality, only time can sort the really rubbish cars from the merely mediocre. The standards by which bad cars are judged have changed over the years. There are some cars that seemed moderately OK when they were new, yet are still remembered because in hindsight they are the worst of their era. Other models stood out as being terrible cars right from the get go, building a worst car reputation that would follow them down the ages like a bad smell.

Not sure I would consider the Phaeton on a list of worst cars. It might be the wrong car for the badge but the technology and level of craftsmanship was exceptional.
It was just not a good car for VW in terms of sales.

Styled and badged differently, it belonged in the Audi lineup. People just don't think Volkswagen and "luxury" in the same sentence.
