New Volkswagen Arteon To Replace CC And Target BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe

New Volkswagen Arteon To Replace CC And Target BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
Volkswagen has revealed that a new premium saloon called the Arteon will be its star of the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March, before going on sale next year.

It’s a ‘totally new model’, sitting above the Passat in VW’s range. It'll replace the to-be discontinued CC, though VW is keen to stress that this new model is a step up in class and isn't a direct replacement - the Arteon name hints it'll be pitched as a flagship much like the now out of production Phaeton was.

VW should be targeting Toyota and Honda. Isn't that what they Audi for.

VW has a strong presence as a near luxury brand in many countries. In some markets they can and do compete with BMW and Merc lower end models. They then use Audi to compete in the upper spectrum of that segment.

While this doesn't make a lot of sense in the US just yet, on a global scale it does fit perfectly.

AGENT009 - While around the rest of the world - VW has a presence as a step above entry level - I am not sure I would consider them a near Luxury level - which is where I consider Audi to be in most areas - as a competitor to Buick and Citroen as Lexus and Infiniti are. WHen you consider the cars that they actually sell - VW still is highly based on the Golf - which is still entry level to me. AND in the USA - VW is still highly thought of as the Entry Level car - where the Beetle was.And THAT is the problem.

It really makes no difference how the rest of the world considers VW - because here they are entry level period - and adding a more expensive HALO car is not going to work any better than the Phaeton did - if they are similarly priced. Even a good looking one like the new Arteon seems to be. THey are wasting this on the VW brand - when it would sell very well as an Audi. Audi - which VW is trying to pass off as a Mercedes competitor - isn't that - because it basically sells small cars - their big cars are not big sellers. AND in the USA - a large A8 simply is not seen as in the same class as an S-class.

When you add in the actual reliability problems that VW has consistently had over the years (THey appear to be good 3 year cars - but don't get a used one because of service cost) - VW is simply spitting into the wind trying to get the USA to perceive VW as upmarket - it won't work - especially since they are not trusted now too. Selling the same cars around the world - as Ford is now losing at (It does not work in China - much less the USA) - ignores OUR desire for more interior space - that the mid-size cars in Europe really don't offer.

Ten years from now - VW will still be trying and failing at this unless they embrace their entry level roots.

Did VW get this name from the Klingon Empire? They really need to fire their naming team.

Once again VW shows just out out of touch it is.

The good: Arteon is a better name than the usual Toesmell and Tigbat kind of names VW loves.

The bad: Targeting BMW? That's why they have Audi.

Where the USA is concerned: VW should replace the CC--a real "no no" for market placement here--and the American Passat with the Arteon and price it like the CamCord and the FusNata.
