Porsche 718 could go electric, Mission E targets 20K annual sales
The production version of the Porsche Mission E concept is still years away from arriving at dealers in 2019, but the brand is already expecting a strong demand for the electric sedan. Porsche boss Oliver Blume tells Germany’s Automobilwoche that the company thinks it can move 20,000 examples of the Mission E a year once the EV hits the road. Plus, there would be more electrically motivated vehicles from the automaker in the future.

Porsche’s 20,000-unit estimate actually seems rather modest. For example, Tesla delivered over 50,000 examples of the Model S in 2015. The California-based automaker estimated that it could move even more of the electric sedans this year.

Porsche has no choice but to incorporate EV tech if they want to maximize performance. The Mission E looks stunning, hope it makes it to market without many modifications.

Then again, how much maximizing of performance do any of the top brands need. 0-60 and top speed among performance brands is already higher than anyone would have imagined 20 years ago and a similar leap from then until now projected forward would would be irresponsibly dangerous.

The real issue with performance of EVs once you get past their 0-60, 1/4 mile, and top speed numbers is repeatability (i.e. having the batter act like a tank of gas so that it can be replenished quickly) and weight. Both issues are a long way from being solved. The Tesla S is a pig for corners because its mass does it no favors in cornering.

I'd love to see Porsche crack both the recharge time and the battery weight time.
