VW Executives Lawyer Up As Justice Department Goes Hunting For Evidence
 Dozens of Volkswagen Group executives in Germany have hired U.S. criminal defense lawyers as the Justice Department ramps up meetings with managers to gather evidence that may lead to charges, people familiar with the matter said.
 
U.S. authorities have traveled to Germany to arrange interviews with managers and seek cooperation in their probe of the automaker's efforts to subvert anti-pollution rules, the people said.

I might be way out of line on this, but if the DOJ was investigating me on criminal wrongdoing, and I knew I was innocent, I'd just tell them the truth (without a lawyer beside me) and clear up the matter as quickly as possible.

Either those VW execs don't think like I do, or they know they're not innocent.

Its pretty obvious that upper management knew about these programs, the more important question is whether or not there is evidence to prove this.

Remember that its the cover up that gets you in far more trouble than the crime itself. VW is circling the wagons and will play hardball going forward. Far from a winning hand but what is one to do when guilty. This will go on for years in courts all over the world. There is blood in the water and all parties affected or otherwise want their share of the spoils.
