Ford Jumps In Bed With Trump After Obama's EPA Shafts The Industry On The Way Out
Ford Motor Company CEO Mark Fields doesn’t have kind words for the Environmental Protection Agency’s surprise decision to keep long-term fuel economy targets in place.
A mid-term review of corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) targets set in 2012 kicked off earlier this year, but the timing of the agency’s recent decision to maintain the 54.5 mile-per-gallon goal reeks of politics, Fields claims.

For automakers, reaching 54.5 mpg means extra costs. To avoid this, Ford is prepared to turn to its election campaign sparring partner — President-elect Donald Trump — for help.

The election saw no limit to the acrimony between Trump and Ford, but that was then, and there’s money at stake now. In a Friday interview with Bloomberg, Fields made it clear he wants Trump to pull levers in Ford’s favor.

“We will be very clear in the things we’d like to see,” Fields said.

No surprise there. Big Auto, Big Oil, Presidency, ... all are for profit. Environment be damned.

Many humans think the issues is "The Environment", rather than "humanity's ability to thrive *within* the environment." F*ck the environment, f*ck humanity. It's that simple.

Human bills itself as the most intelligent species ever walk the earth, but recent events indicate that it's not that smart - at least for a subset of powerful people who make the decisions for the rest of us. These people put profits and personal gains above the common goods for the human species, not just Americans. Shame on them.

I have pledged that all my future vehicle purchases will be EVs, and hope that more people will join in.

What's hilarious is consumers don't even realize how this move is only going to "shaft" them, say good bye to gains in fuel economy, oh and hello to incoming increased gas prices, great move!

And if this guy keeps pissing off China before he even gets inaugurated we will have atleast a hellish 4 yrs to pay!

Thanks America

Perhaps when he goes on his first world tour he as the leader of the Free World should bow like an adolescent to all these other loser nations? Despots, Tyrants, Communist Dictators... yea, bow to them... He is putting America first, THEY can bow to us. America is the only nation in the history of the planet to conquer the world to free it twice! Screw China...

In this case I would have expected the EPA to hold the line. There is no reason to change course.

BRAVO... zero reason to change course, other than Ideology and power to control. Trump will erase all this just like he'll erase B/O.

Trump will erase most of prior administration's marks. This is actually going to be fairly easy, because a lot of it was under the guise of the executive order rather than law. Law is harder to change, while an executive order can be tossed rather easily.

I guess if you put the work in to it from the beginning it stays, if not it is gone.

Its really about leadership. Leaders bring people together and to their vision. BO has no experience leading or doing anything except agitating, guy never had a job in his life. If BO had brought others to the table, asked for the perspectives of others -vs- telling everyone "I won, you lost" for 8 yrs... he might have a legacy... he gambled and lost...

Political idealogy aside, the situation is basically one of European and Japanese gov'ts are more proactive in setting rigorous emission and fuel economy standards, and their car mfrs respond successfully in meeting many (not all) of those demands. YOu can say they're socialist, too hands on, etc. but that's the way it's been and will continue to be. So during economic cycles when high fuel economy becomes a priority, they have cars that readily answer those high fuel economy and emission standards, and succeed financially during those periods. The profit during those periods help them fund their R&D and marketing operations. US tend to be more hands off and US car mfrs tend to be more reliant on favorable fuel price and loose regulatory periods to make their money, and tend to suffer more during more challenging economic periods. I know there are exceptions but in general, this has been the case over the last 50+ yrs. In this case with Ford, it is no different.

That's not why they have small cars that get good mileage. These countries are much smaller than the US and their cities are cramped. Many European cities are hundreds of years old with narrow streets and ltd parking. Ever driven a car in Florence, Italy... its insane. The FIAT 500 is the perfect size car for European/Japanese cities. America is huge and our cities are laid out differently not to mention the suburbs. Their cars evolved as did ours and gas mileage was not an issue until yes, the European nations went Socialist and then needed the revenue... It became an issue for us when OPEC pulled the plug in the 70's.... but there was/is no gas shortage, its simply not an issue. Car emissions is another issue. For decades Europeans have had diesels and I understand they are looking at phasing them out due exactly to emissions. American cars had catalytic converters in the early 70's whereas Europe didn't work on their emissions until later in the decade. The US was ahead of Europe in emissions in the 70's. But again, due to the make up of their cities, they might be ahead but I honestly don't know.

Key takeaway from this article...(1) Initial CAFE requirements were too high and reeks of politics (2) Initial CAFE requirements were too costly and affected bottom line profits (3) Ford CEO wants Trump to "pull levers in Fords favor".

Conclusion: The government pushed forward policy that was too expensive for big manufacturer to bear and big manufacturer wants new politicians to put forth policy for their benefit and to increase profits for the company and shareholders. Typical Republican ideology that the benefits to the few will always outweigh the benefits to the many.

Muslim presidente-X should be all concerned about CAFE standards as the most vacationist & shittiest president ever using Air Force 1 to jetset all over the muslim world apologizing about Murican exceptionalism. Good riddance to a community organizer whom was a failed president who will be whitewashed (pun intended) from the history books for his lack of accomplishments, executive orders, anti-Jew, anti Americanism and George Soros cock breath. Lock him up with all the Clintons on RICO & Treason charges. It's the least they deserve for a retirement package.

At the time that the current regs were put in place - the Auto makers were involved in the decision and it was them that came up with the wierd standards based on the wheelbase of the cars.

The real problem is not the standards - it is the market place. When the price of gasoline dropped in half - the market switched to suv/crossovers - since they were the only "cars" that offered more upright seating - which meant more legroom - and more interior space - something smaller cars just don't have. And with the increase in TRUCK purchases ( pick ups and SUVs/crossovers and even mini-vans are considered trucks by the EPA) - the manufacturers cannot sell the small cars they need to - to meet the standards. AND this is what the EPA should have looked at - and reduced the mileage standards based on the NEW product mix - that is quite different than it was when gas was expensive.

THe economy is much improved from 8 years ago when the republican de-regulation let the finance sector run wild and took huge losses that should not have been allowed - and would not have been allowed under regulation before. However - the USA could not do what the Europeans have done by Heavily taxing gasoline to force consumers into smaller more efficient cars OR into Diesel cars (Which they could not tax as high due to its use in COMMERCE transportation.

The fact is - it is the President BEFORE Obama that will go into the record books as one of the worst - with not only the second worst financial crisis in our history - but also a successful (For them) attack on this country by Arab extremists. Obama had - for 6 years - a Congress that was so obstructionist - that they refused to consider even his proposals for infrastructure investment - which they now call the savior of the country. And the country blamed him for that - and the will Blame Trump for the same things - when the Democrats in the Senate Fillibuster to prevent most of the things - like the "wall" that will NEVER get built.
