The Mercedes G Class is selling better than ever
37 years after it was introduced, the G-Wagen has hit a production record with 20,000 being built in 2016.

It may be 37 years old, but the Mercedes G Class is more successful than ever. Indeed, 20,000 of the things have rolled off the production line in Graz, Austria this year, breaking all previous records.

The 20,000th 2016 G-Wagen is pictured here, a bright white AMG G63, complete with a 5.5-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 motor. Its owner splashed out on options, too, including the Designo Mystic White Bright paintwork and Designo leather upholstery.

People love this retro, square utilitarian shape, and yet all of the car companies are cranking out weird organic things.

Totally agree. Jeep should update the original Cherokee and dump the Asian-looking POS that is currently on sale.

Throw a real Cherokee face on the new Wrangler and there is your premium Jeep. A simple renaming would be needed.

The Wrangler "Cherokee" would be the Jeep Cherokee.
The soccer-mom station wagon AKA Grand Cherokee would be the Jeep Wagoneer.
The Cherokee would be the Jeep Aztek.

I can't believe this is still being made and people continue to buy it. One of the least practical cars of all time. Even the Hummer H1 at least had some unique offroad capabilities.

If practical was required for a car to be produced, then the Tesla Model X wouldn't have been produced.

I wonder if the Chrysler's SRT division had been tasked to dream up an upscale version of the Wrangler Unlimited with either a tt-V6 or V8 & a solid roof that (could) command a premium to compete with the G-wagen.

What's perplexing is that supposedly Sergio has killed the Wagoneer and yet, as you point out, it would be so easy to use the Wrangler's new platform for an upscale SUV.

Yes! I was definitely left "dumb-stuck" upon hearing that the Wagoneer program may be shelved. IMO, the only thing that "should" stop Jeep cold would be to shift all efforts to developing premium/upscale large & midsized SUVs for the Chrysler brand. Also, M-B has an abundance of CUV platform options that Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep could use - this particular partnership should continue on as long as possible.

I didn't realize the partnership with MB was still in force.
