Toyota To Banish Beige By Flushing 60% Of Powertrains In Favor Of Clean And Fun
Toyota is planning a comprehensive overhaul of its drivetrains and will replace at least 60 per cent of them by the end of 2021. Automotive News reports that in the next five years, the Japanese brand will introduce 17 different variants of nine new engines, produce 10 versions of six fresh hybrid systems and make 10 variants of four new transmissions. It is thought that these comprehensive updates will not only make Toyota’s range more environmentally friendly, but also more exhilarating.

On paper that sounds like a lot of drivetrains, but I doubt there will be 9 new engines. More likely 2-3 with different displacements and or with forced induction.

Toyota is a wise company and they have gotten a lot of mileage out of some fairly old engine architectures which are still competent.

The new stuff should be impressive.
