Volkswagen is actively considering how it could build a large pick-up truck to take on home-grown stars like the Ford F-150 and the Dodge Ram in the American market, the firm’s US boss has revealed. The German manufacturer has had to rethink its plans for sales growth in the US region, in the wake of its dieselgate scandal. But it launched the large Atlas SUV - a car designed specifically for American tastes - at the recent Los Angeles Auto Show, and VW USA boss Hinrich Woebcken admitted that even larger vehicles could be on the agenda.

In the American Pick Up truck market - the top two are known for reasonably well made long term reliable trucks. I have always questioned the choice of Turbo-engines in the Ford because I expect long term reliability will suffer - but we have not reached that time to see.

One thing we do know- VW does not represent Long Term reliability any more. It is not just an image problem - it is a reality. In addition - VW also represents expensive repair bills too. AND until THOSE things are fixed across the rest of the VW lines - they will fail with a pick up. Add to that - that large Pick ups are largely sold to the one demographic that demands made in the USA - which is why Japanese pick-ups have never caught on that much too - and you result in another loser for VW - if they try to do it quickly.

The only way VW would have a shot would be if they buy Ram.

As for doing it themselves, they should look to Toyota that is stunningly good at engineering high quality products that people want and yet THEY cannot crack the full-sized pickup code with the Tundra even though they build it in TEXAS.

Feckless VW wouldn't stand a chance.

TomM You do realize that Dodge Pickups come with free tacos and are made in Mexico. For the longest time GM pickups were made in Oshawa Ontario? So much for made in Murica unless you mean North America?

What is a domestic or foreign brand anymore? Harleys have more Chinese components than any other country. Only final assembly is done here from offshored parts yet the final product is made in America. Our label laws are really fucked up.

Years ago a survey was done as to what the most "North American Made/Content" vehicle was and the obvious answers were the big 3 -WRONG. At the time it was the Toyota Camry made in Cambridge Ontario and some of the worst were the big 3 with all the cheap, offshore part suppliers.

The only full size pickup they have a chance at competing with is the Nissan Titan...is it worth it at those sales volumes? The big 3 have the lions share of this market mostly due to long seeded brand loyalty, and Toyota is the solid fourth choice with. If they want to sell pickups they would have a better shot with the compact/midsize market.

Well we all know about the VW inline four. It's a smooth engine but has not had much reliability in the past. When you are talking about a truck you are talking about a V6 or V8. VAG does have those engines in it's portfolio so I'm sure they could be adapted. If VAG were smart(which at times I question if they really are) they would buy a bunch of trucks from Ford, GM and FCA and take them apart. They should also buy the trucks from Nissan and Honda and Toyota as well. The problem is they should have been doing this 15 years ago. Breaking into the truck market now is dicey because VAG has a reliability problem and there is huge customer loyalty with the big three. I think they might have better luck in the compact truck market(as in Ford Ranger)as no one is really selling a smaller truck in the US right now. It's kind of like the compact CUV market. They should do a small 4dr cab. Otherwise I think they are doomed for the truck market in general.
