Tesla Introduces 40 Cent Per Minute Charge For Supercharger Squatters
That was quick. Last week, CEO Elon Musk warned that Tesla will “take action” against Tesla owners leaving their vehicles at Supercharger stations after charging is over. He said: “Supercharger spots are meant for charging, not parking”. Today the company took action and introduced a new $0.40 per minute idle fee for the entire Supercharger network. The fee will start as soon as the charging session is over, but it will be waived if the vehicle is moved within 5 minutes – basically giving owners 5 minutes of free parking after charging is over at a Supercharger.

I feel it's reasonable. Imagine if someone parked their car at a fuel pump and went for lunch at a restaurant. Similar thing with a Supercharger terminal: After you're fully charged, you're depriving someone else of the terminal's use/benefit, and it's inconsiderate.

Hopefully the token charge will make users more mindful. Hopefully, it doesn't start charging you the second you're juiced up, and gives you a grace period.

Here's an idea: In order to use the Supercharger terminal, you have a "profile," and the terminal texts or phones you (free of charge) to let you know you're fully charged, and you have 5 minutes (7?) to disconnect before you start getting penalized. That way, users can be relaxed AND considerate at the same time. The best of both worlds.

It should be more! A $24 surcharge for an hour is nothing for those that buy these cars. It should be $1/min.

I don't think the point is for Tesla to make money on this, just to give a nudge to people that are hogging a station while others are waiting. Also, if a station is empty there is no charge to park there.

At some point the cars will unplug themselves and move to a different spot autonomously, so this is just a stop-gap.

Put the methpipe down, not sure what has gotten into you today.

Telsa's goal is to make money by selling cars, batteries, and solar. They are not aiming to make money on servicing cars or superchargers. The only reason they are imposing the fee is for the benefit of people that want to use chargers during peak times.

Why can't autocrash be activated by Tesla stations to remotely move and park the cars after recharging is complete?

Autopilot? Should happen soon, the current hardware is fully capable of moving the car autonomously. All of the charger handles will have to be upgraded though.
