GM Lays Off 1300 Workers And Idles 4 Plants To Reduce Inventories
General Motors told state officials Monday that it plans to lay off nearly 1,300 workers in March as it eliminates one of two production shifts at a car plant in Detroit.

They are on top of about 2,000 jobs being cut next month to reduce bloated inventories. GM said earlier Monday that it also is halting assembly lines at four plants for several weeks in January in response to lower demand for the cars they build.

GM cars are clearly second tier moving to third tier, when redesigned models don't sell.

Interestingly - the redesigned Cruze and Malibu ARE selling - actually quite well. However - the smaller than Cruze cars are not selling well at all - and everyone is having a problem selling Large front wheel drive cars like the Impala. I believe this is a case - as in the past - where GM tried to avoid layoffs during the Holidays - and the cars piled up. When compared to OTHER manufacturers - GM cars actually are doing well - Malibu now outsells the Ford Fusion - and GM a little up from last year - when most Manufacturers are on the minus side on their sales - look at BMW for that one.

Add in one other stat =- GM has deliberately greatly reduced their sales to Rental Fleets - where they make little profit. YOu will note that you do not see GM cars there as much as Fords, Chryslers, - and Nissans. That means better profits - and better resale value when the flood of Rental cars does not hit the market.

Sales of GM cars are not that terrible, but their overproduction is.

@TomM check your facts. The Fusion outsells the Malibu.

As a side note, the Cruze outsells the Focus easily.

The Spark sells almost as well as the Sonic and Spark sales are relatively unaffected by cheap gas.

The Sonic was never a brilliant design and it is getting old. Granted it's not as old as the Focus which in its 3rd generation was really just a reskinning of the 2nd generation.

Isn't this somehow Obama's fault?
