Comparison Tests: Porsche Cayman vs. BMW Z4 Coupe

As everyone expected, the Porsche Cayman S wins.

What you get when you compare the BMW Z4M coupe to the Porsche Cayman S is a comparison between a heavily sport-oriented luxury BMW coupe vs. a specifically track designed Porsche.

When handling and driving dynamics are compared do you actually the think the car specficially designed for the track and racing will EVER lose to the heavily sport-oriented luxury non-track designed car?.....

No and a Porsche will never lose to a BMW when handling, driving dynamics and feel are taken into account.

That's what makes Porsches that much better of a driver's car than any M offering ever conceived by BMW, any numb AMG offering from Mercedes-Benz or any weight abused RS car from Audi.

If you're over 6 feet you may feel the Z4 coupe and roadster are too cramped. Even though the BMW is $9k cheaper it wasn't worth the short cabin space. The Porsche looks like it's worth saving for. Has BMW ever beaten a Porsche in one of these tests?

That's the reason I would take the BMW over the Porsche. I mean, if you're going to buy a weekend toy, you might as well get one that feels a little rough around the edges. In the BMW, every road feels a little rough. The suspension is wound so tight, lane lines feel like speed bumps, and actual bumps leave you wishing you actually used that Ab Blaster sitting in your closet. It can be annoying, but it's also a constant reminder that you should be seeking out smooth, twisty stretches of pavement instead of merely running errands in your $60K performance coupe.

Once you find that perfect stretch of road, the BMW challenges you more than the Cayman S, too. It demands precise footwork to get the downshifts right, and you can't flinch when a midcorner bump sends the rear end sideways a foot or two. Almost everything about the BMW demands more of your attention than the Cayman's easily accessible performance, and that's what makes it special. When you tear up a back road, you actually feel like you had something to do with it.

For everyday use the Cayman S, for challanging the real drivers, the Z4 M.

The Z4 M is car build in the spirit of the old Porsches (those meant for an few elite bastards), or the modern purits GT3 RS and GT2.

The Z4 M Coupe will never win as an all rounder/everyday car, but the Cayman S will never win on the thrills/engajement/feeling front.

Both great cars, in their segments.

Based on experience. I test drove both of these cars, and took alot of things into account, driving dynamics, power, sound, feel, fun, looks. I preferred the BMW, it was better in most all of those categories than the Porsche. The article is correct in the context that the BMW is less refined, but thats what I love about it. It feels raw. Plus, the fact is that the Cayman seems always overshadowed by the 911. You buy the Cayman and they ask why you didnt go for the 911. With the BMW its a different conversation, its not overshadowed by the 5, 6 or anything else. It's on its own. To the one reply that says save up the 9k to gor for the cayman? why not save 18k then and buy the real thing in a 911? Anyway, I bought the BMW, and have had it for 3 months. Absolutely love the car. Its simple, pure raw automobiling pleasure. Personally, I think its looks are way beyond the Cayman. Just my opinion.

If all you want to do is drive and you want a decent attempt of luxury to go along with it, Porsche is "The Ultimate Driving Machine," without any doubt.

I would take the Beemer, i dont like the look of the Porsche, only the 911 looks good. IMO.

It's funny you say the RS4 isn't as good as the M3, as in every comparison test they're in, the RS4 comes out on top. It's a better car, in all aspects, including handling. You've never driven one yourself- and by the way, it's faster than "your" M5. The M3 is perfectly adequate, that is, if you can't afford the RS4. I know the $70K+ price tag is a little steep for you.

I mean it's true that porsche is a better all-around car. But being this baised against BMW is just stupid.

I just don't think the hardcore types who buy these coupes are going to go with the TT, which does not have the performance heritage of a Porsche or BMW. It's prettier is not usually a selling point with these guys.

When someone can afford a 2-seater car that serves no great purpose except to thrill, their dream has been to get a Porsche or a BMW. Neither of these cars lack in thrills or quality. There is no door open for the TT to claim buyers. We'll see how it sells. If you want a less-traveled path, it's certainly a good choice. That may be its only selling point. It's different.

Actually, the TT has consistently sold better than the Boxster and BMW Z3/Z4. Check Europe- especially the UK. The city streets are flocked with them. Most people want to pose.

But the new TT will attract both enthusiasts and posers- can you imagine a tuned 300hp ABT TT 2.0T quattro?

the tt is a huge success here in the uk.

random fact, the uk buys more convertibles than any other country.
at the moment, the tt does not compete with these cars. when the s/rs comes out, then it will.
honestly, i wouldn't buy either of these coupes. i'd get the convertible.
