LC500 Review: Has Lexus Become So Reliant On Wizardry That They No Longer Know How To Make Car That Is A Fun To Drive?
Those hoping that Lexus would bring its technology-reliant ways to the LC500 will not have to walk away disappointed because the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class fighter has the silicon toys (not those kind) to rival the International Space Station. Switches, buttons, and Lexus’ notoriously annoying touchpad infotainment system is present inside the new grand touring machine and even the LC500h, the hybrid variant, gets a nifty four speed gearbox placed aft of its CVT to reduce the nuisances of a shift-free acceleration.

In effect, it helps the LC500h have the same torque manipulation as the ten speed gearbox, the transmission its 5.0-liter V8-powered cousin, the LC500. While Lexus has yet to reveal information on an LC-F, we’d hope that product planners at Toyota’s luxury wing are wise enough to know better than to leave performance enthusiasts stranded in this segment.

Lexus core clients aren't looking for "fun to drive" anyway, they know where their bread and butter is

A GT used to be a comfortable coupe with a powerful engine suited to a long drive.

A Jensen Interceptor was a GT and the Jaguar E Type was a sports car.
A Camaro is a GT and the Corvette is a sports car.
The Porsche 928 was a GT and the 911 was/is the sports car.
The AMG GT is a sports car pretending to be a GT.

A car does not need to be a GT OR a sports car to be fun to drive - Matt
That 450 SE L6.9 that I had was neither - but it sure beat the hell out of most every other car on the road at the time - and was incredibly fun to drive.

And back in the day - some of the cars we put together in my Barn (which has an above the ground lift in it) were also surprisingly fun - as well. Today - you would need a lot of electrical and computer knowledge to put together a car that would still pass emissions inspection - so that type of fun is something the younger folks of this group will never know. As a TVR person - you might understand it - since even those cars needed a lot of personal tender loving care - but rewarded you for it.

Acura is also big on "I Am Tech" rather than focusing on a superb user experience. That seems to be common in many places, not just Lexus, and not just automotive. Features over functionality, or value delivered, or doing something exceptionally well.

And yet the "tech" in Acura's cars isn't the least bit innovative.

Mom's Friend has a Es350 - and she says that car is "Fun to Drive" (THey are both in their late 90's). I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder!

Is your mom's 90 yr old friend the woman whom just drove her ES the wrong way down a one way street the other day in this video?

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=C4Q-_cwcMsU

I'm sure she found her ES exhilarating, fun, and exciting to say the least

Uh - no- Both my Mom and her friend are good drivers - have better than perfect vision - and drive sparingly only locally to places they KNOW - so they would not go the wrong way - they would know it was wrong. Neither drink as well. Last year - my mom put less than 1500 miles on her car - and her friend Lorraine probably put less - because she lives closer to the Market.

However - the point was - when you are approaching 100 years of age - anything you still can drive is "fun". Getting up in the morning is too.

Have owned many many cars and only one Lexus. Would not say it was fun to drive but it was rock solid, super comfortable, reliable and had the best stereo of any car I have ever owned. A great car to commute in congested traffic around NYC. This car will be extremely satisfying to Lexus's base of loyal customers.

That hardly qualifies as a review at all.
